Is it humane to trim a beak, and if so, how would I go about it?

Wow, that mental image is horrific. Poor hens. I’m glad you helped them. That article is super helpful, thank you. I’m going to wait a few days before I try anything with the beak, even super gentle things like what you suggested. It’s probably an irrational fear, but you know how it is with...

Is it humane to trim a beak, and if so, how would I go about it?

I have pieces of a deconstructed parakeet cage that could definitely work for safe separation, thank you. Right now they’re in completely separated pens, which is surely adding to the stress of all four chicks. I’ll check out those videos for sure. I think I’m going to wait a few days before I...

Is it humane to trim a beak, and if so, how would I go about it?

I was thinking the same! The behavior would fit too—LOTS of chest puffing and angry little hops. Also, he’s by far the most feathered out. Not sure if that means anything. I’m not a bantam person either

Is it humane to trim a beak, and if so, how would I go about it?

That is fascinating, I had no idea those existed! I think my birds are a bit too small for those now, but I’ll keep it in mind.

Is it humane to trim a beak, and if so, how would I go about it?

Thank you, I was worried that the procedure would be painful and I will definitely avoid it. No need to hurt the poor devil. I do have an adult flock, full of very opinionated hens. I haven’t tried that yet because it’s still pretty cold where I am, nights in the low 20s and teens, and I was...

Is it humane to trim a beak, and if so, how would I go about it?

Hello all. I recently bought four straight run assorted bantam chicks, who are about a month old now. One of them (who I am affectionately calling Lucifer), started pecking the smallest of the four. I thought that if I gave them some time they would work it out, but eventually Luci drew blood...

    Emergency Raven Care?

Unfortunately the bird died before I could get him anywhere or call any of our local wildlife rehab centers. Thank you all for the advice!

    Emergency Raven Care?

Ooh, yeah that definitely is a little scary. Actually, there’s been several sick crows in the area.

    Emergency Raven Care?

Thanks! Yeah, I was definitely worried about diseases. He’s in a cage that I don’t use anymore, and I have him in a separate room.

    Emergency Raven Care?

Hi everyone. A few hours ago, a family member found a raven lying in a driveway. It was apathetic and didn’t seem to be able to lift its head. I ended up with it for the night. He can fly, although not for a long distance. Both legs are moving but one seems to be having muscle spasms. He...

    Found baby mice

I’m not anywhere near an expert, but I’ve tried my best to save a few orphaned babies from the hay fields. Often they die. It sounds terrible but they’re just really delicate and hard for humans to care for. I fed mine either warm milk (not too warm, just a little over room temp) or kitten...

Should I get a second opinion on my horse’s sensitivity?

Yes definitely! I will still have access to a round pen, and his trainer is willing to continue working with him on the ground. He really is a sweet horse, and I think we will continue to have fun together.

Should I get a second opinion on my horse’s sensitivity?

Very last update, I promise! For anyone still interested in how everything turned out, here it is. I had the vet inject his hocks and put him on high vitamin E doses. His sensitivity/behavioral/lameness issues continued regardless. It has gotten worse and much less predictable, to the point that...

Ended Official BYC 2023 Summer Fair Contest—Equine Show Ring

This is my other horse, a 19 yr old mare named Aspen. She’s retired now, but that doesn’t stop her from giving me all the sass. She taught me all the ropes of riding and put up with lots of mistakes on my part. A very good (and grumpy) girl!

Ended Official BYC 2023 Summer Fair Contest—Equine Show Ring

This is Arley. His show name is Third Time’s A Charm, and he lives up to the name! He is the sweetest, most personable horse I have ever met. From older green broke ex-cart horse to dressage competition mount, he has changed a lot in the last year and half!

Any tips on keeping livestock while dealing with health issues?

Right now, I’m taking Beyond Balance herbals. Although, that’s temporary. I’m seeing a new doctor in a few days to talk over treatments. I’m so glad to hear that the worst of it is over for you! That gives me a lot of hope. I feel so disconnected from my body and my symptoms right now, mostly...

Any tips on keeping livestock while dealing with health issues?

Wow, I just checked that out. Almost all of those symptoms have been something I have experienced. That is… both terrifying and comforting.

Any tips on keeping livestock while dealing with health issues?

Thank you so much! I’ve really been struggling with this. My first doctor thought I had several of the co-infections you mentioned. I took the antibiotic treatments, had a die off reaction, and then stopped for a bit. The symptoms came back, marginally worse than the first time. I went through...
