Lethargic hen sitting lots and sagging undercarriage

Thanks for the advice. Just removed 4-500mls of fluid from her abdomen. Still looks like there is a bit in there, it's still a bit squishy so will check again tomorrow and maybe have another go. Any chance of it not being serious? I assume it's liver failure or something else terminal?

Lethargic hen sitting lots and sagging undercarriage

Thanks. Her crop is ok, it's the back end. She seems a little better at the moment, having a peck around etc. I have taken a video of her walking around as she is still very labored compared to the others. She is the bigger of the langshans

Lethargic hen sitting lots and sagging undercarriage

Hi all I have 2 year langshan cross hen that doesn't seem to be her normal self. She is walking slow although not limping, tail down and sitting a lot. Late spring here, she came back on the lay after winter and was broody. She is back laying again now and eating and drinking. I noticed when...

    Help with soft shell eggs

Things have been going well in the coop. After the late afternoon egg following the first calcium pill, she had a day off as to be expected but no soft egg under the roosting bars and has laid 2 days in a row. Shells are still a little thin and rough but good enough to hold and perhaps better...

    Help with soft shell eggs

And just to follow up, a couple of hours after the pill went in, she laid an egg in the nesting box. Just a fluke of course, nothing would work that fast! The soft ones have been overnight so we will see what happens tonight and tomorrow

    Help with soft shell eggs

I got her wrapped up and manged to open her beak and pop the pill in. She didn't put up too much if a fight and didn't try to peck me so here's hoping for a good result

    Help with soft shell eggs

Not obviously moulting but thinking about it, there is one white feather in the coop so it could be the start of a moult cycle I guess. Strange to do it in spring?

    Help with soft shell eggs

Thanks, I'll try and grab her and administer it tomorrow. If she squats it will make it easy!

    Help with soft shell eggs

I'm not sure I could get it into her beak... can you mix it into something? Or will she taste it and spit out?

    Help with soft shell eggs

One of our flock is laying mostly soft shell eggs, with the odd ok one. 2 year old light sussex. Her eggs have always had fairly thin shells but she laid in the nesting box and they were all good. She has been a great layer, started laying last winter and laid right through the winter we have...

    Rough thin shell eggs

No real changes that wouldn't effect all 4 birds. It is well into spring now here and light from about 6.30am until bird bedtime of about 7.30pm. We have had some seriously bad windy days but she doesn't seem stressed.

    Rough thin shell eggs

One of our 4 is laying some strange eggs. They are approx 1 year old and have been laying since around may (southern hemisphere). The bird in question is a light sussex. She lays every day, her eggs have always been smaller than the other birds but otherwise normal. For the last few weeks I...

Trying to work out age of pullets

Thank you, no squatting yet but I have been keeping an eye out for it. I haven't opened up the nesting boxes yet as one of them isn't roosting on the perches at night and don't want her to think the nesting box is a good option! Might look to do that soon though if you reckon they are close?

Trying to work out age of pullets

Hi Just trying to work out the ages of these pullets. The light sussex I suspect are about 12-16 weeks? Does that seem right, they seem to be going through a molt. The black/green ones are langshan/RIR cross, they are huge birds and a couple of months older than the others. The combs have...

    New flock integration

Thanks for the reply, appreciate it. A couple of times today the older ones almost tolerated them being quiet close, minding their own business foraging away, mixed in with plenty of chasing them off the preferred areas. As it started to get dark, the older ones were into the coop first and...

    Cats/run design

Thanks for the reply. 2 are 5 months old but are already pretty big. The other 2 are around 2-3 months old. The cat wasn't going for any of them, just lying in the run. Quite bizarre. I will build an extension on the fence today and at least net the sides, will make it so I can add a roof if...

    Cats/run design

We have a new urban chicken set up. Small coop and then an out door run area. This is fenced with 4 foot netting and no roof. The chickens cant get out but yesterday there was a cat just casually lying in the run, it hadn't attacked and 2 of our birds are 5 months old and pretty big so I'm not...

    New flock integration

Hi We got our first chickens this week. 4 pullets. Sounds easy, small (but big enough) backyard run with coop, a run with shade and 3 fruit trees for shelter and points of interest to peck around... Have a few issues. The 4 pullets are from 2 different sets at the breeder. 2 are 4-5 months...
