    My rooster can’t crow

    I don't think a human/chicken cross is possible.

    First eggs from my pullet

I have a pullet, which I suspect was sired by a white Easter Egger and damed by a Mars-Bar and is 19 weeks old (4 months 11 days old). I just found 2 of her eggs today. I am not sure if I should classify her as a Easter Egger or Olive Egger, but I am ecstatic about her starting to lay. I've...

Day 20, no wiggling anymore - help!!

Just remember that a broody hen can be off the eggs every single day for an hour or so and the eggs hatch. I have one hen that goes broody at least once a year and she always took at least an hour for herself each day.

    Which eggs to hatch?

I will just add this with regard to hatch rates and age, with a caviat that I only hatched a handful of times. When I hatched eggs that were under 2 weeks old, I got a hatched rate of 100%. Late last year, I did a desperation hatch and used eggs which were over a month old. Result - 3 out of...

Question of the Day - Tuesday, February 24th, 2026

I already have a chronic stuffy nose. Can I trade it for something else?

    Another gender challenge.

To close the loop. Looks like the chick did turn out to be a pullet.

Bad Behavior in free range roo

I did see a video of a rooster rescue where they take in even those roosters who were used in cock fighting. It takes commitment but they do rehabilitate them. Basically, anytime a roo starts a fight he goes into a roo jail. Supposedly it works. Personally, I would not have the time nor...

Formerly “head rooster” was overthrown by a younger one - now hides all day and won’t eat!

I have multiple coops. My suggestion would be for you to build another coop. It does not have to be large. My coops were opposite ends of the same fenced-in back yard and then a third tiny coop in the middle and surrounding with its own fencing. This was my setup for injured chickens.

    Nesting boxes & coop

I was just about to ask this exact question. I am in the process of building a nesting box for a newly built coop and started to wonder how separate nesting boxes compare to those attached to the coop or built into the coop. I am taking the attached to the coop approach. The hens will have an...

How do you name a chicken?

My stepdaughter named most of the chickens. I only named 2 Plymouth Barred Rock hens - Roxy and Rockette ...because I am extremely creative :lau

Worried about mail order chicks with usps slow service

I ordered 10 chicks from them late last year and they also took 3 days to get to me. However, all the chicks were healthy and I had zero issues with them. Not even a single case of pasty butt.

Thinking about switching from a manual coop door to an automatic one – what should I watch out for?

Just a word of caution about the automatic doors available on Amazon. Couple of years ago, I bought 4 of them. I have only used one reliably during that time. I did start using a second one recently but originally it quit working after a few months so I put it away. Few weeks ago, I...

    Good Chick Breeds?

Funny you would point out Salmon Favorelles as mild mannered. I have one and her name is Karen. She has always been the most bossy hen and always the top hen. I probably got the one in a million oddball

Coop door open for the first time.

Nine of them have come out. I went outside and squatted in front of their door. They got a little more adventurous. One of the pullets was on the threshold but reluctant to come outside so I picked her up and put her on the ground. Within a couple of minutes five more came outside. I still have...

Coop door open for the first time.

There are reasons why it took 3 months. Their brooder (second brooder) was 8x4 feet and in an outdoor building so not tiny box. I had to build a new coop for them and it took longer than I thought it would. I've transitioned chicks before and I don't remember any of them staying in the coop...

    Roosting outdoors

Yes. Definitely do not let them sleep out in the open. I lost two chickens like that. I did not realize that a chicken did not go in for the night and found her half eaten in the morning. Happened twice. I normally count my chickens but when the coop is full, it is not that easy (I look in...

Pullets and cockerel going into the coop before the automatic door closes

I know this is a 6 month old thread, but.... I have two hens living in the coop by themselves. They used to be with a rooster and all went into the coop before it got dark. Unfortunately a fox killed the rooster. Now the hens stay out until after dark. I have an automatic coop door and it...

Coop door open for the first time.

I have 3 month old chicks (or are they officially chickens now?). Three days ago, I finally moved them from their broader to a new coop. They've been locked inside the coop since and I decided to give them outdoor access today. One of the cockerels went as far as looking outside, standing on the...
