Great rooster stories! I love having roosters just for the crowing bc I was a city girl growing up. I currently have a wonderful orange silkie boy named Curry. He is super friendly and comes to me for attention every time Im in the coop. I had some Christmas and January hen hatches and now have...
I too have a young bantam breed that lays only clear yolks. Ive gotten 3 or 4 so far. I wouldnt know there was a yolk at all if it werent for the perfect yolk shape.
Can a chick form and develop in her eggs?
I too have moved 2 broodies, one silkie and one little bantam, with chicks and eggs. I had them in a small low sided box that could easily be moved without jostling her too much. I moved one into a prepared rabbit hutch I purchased and the other into a double nesting box I had left over from an...
Your "roo" looks like and sounds like a hen to me. My silkie roo has a prominent comb that I am not seeing on yours. Also, all of the behaviors you are describing I have seen with my own broody silkie hens.
Mama hen will keep them warm while they are keeping her warm too! I had 3 hens, all bantam breeds hatch right after Christmas here in VA. The temps dropped into the teens and 20s and they were all fine. However I did lose 4 chicks due to two of my silkie moms fighting over nests. The chicks were...
I am only letting my hens hatch their own broods. I am addicted to how sweet yet fierce they are!❤️ I have 2 white silkie hens hatching out about 12 mixed bantam and silkie eggs. My roosters are a beautiful buff/orange silkie and a beautiful colorful(not sure the type)bantam. Cant wait to see...
I am currently enjoying 3 hens-2silkie and one plain bantam-hatching their broods. We are in the first 3 days and they look and sound healthy. They keep each other nice and warm. I moved my little bantam into a brooder house wo additional heat. I have given her a cardboard box w shavings and...
So Im getting lots of good info here but Im concerned now about how to feed a mixed flock of roos, layers, and chicks. Everyone needs something different and Im not sure how Im supposed to keep everything separate! Is there something safe for all?
Yes I will probably feed them to the flock. I dont eat them bc they are small and it just seems weird! Haha. I will give them a few days before I start to cull out the older ones. Since my little bantam hen has started laying again since raising her first family this summer, I feel like she...
Thanks for your reply. Some of the eggs have a few days left and Ill have to toss them. They all started laying at once after a lull. When they were broody no one was laying except for my big hens. Oh well.
No she has not gone broody again. But she is still getting all of her feathers in. Im hoping she’ll come around once her molt is complete. She is fully recovered and looking healthy. I have 2 nests w 7 silkie and bantam eggs each that I would love to hatch. My silkie hens who I did break...
I had my first broody stay on a nest of unfertilized Eggs and then no eggs for about 5 or 6 weeks. I kept taking her off and putting her outside for food but she wouldnt quit. I didnt have the heart to break her. Then one day after fall temps came she just popped off the nest like nothing...
Thats encouraging bc my little bantam hen was gettng bullied out of 1of 3 laying boxes by the big girls. She moved over off of her eggs and onto a few big brown ones. At the ridk of upsetting her more I just gently placed her cold eggs around her last night. Temps are in the 60s. This morning...
