    New chicken mama questions

I think everyone knows by now, I free-range my Speckled Sussex. Their coop has 7' ceilings and three aluminum storm (human) doors, no poop doors. The only place they can get their layer crumbles is in the coop. Feeding only in the coop prevents wild birds from contaminating their feed and...

    Hamster ball for Chickens

I do not know if this "Hamster-Chicken ball" is real since it was photo shopped over the chicken. If it happens to be real I believe it would be very dangerous to the chicken. In using it you have basically prepackaged the poor chicken in a "takeout container" for its predator. ☹

    Roosters are awesome

Over they years we have had some really mean roosters of different standard and bantam breeds. They were mighty tasty in Pot Pies. Right now we have two very gentle Speckled Sussex roosters, Boss Man and Mr White. When customers would come to our farm to purchase livestock or eggs they would...

    What are your thoughts???

I free-range my chickens, but we live in a rural area. My chickens have protection in the form of plenty of places to hide and our donkeys. I have lost 7 chickens over the past 24 years due to stray dogs and careless drivers and it broke my heart. I understand the the problems you will have if...

    Best breed to attack hawks

For years we used Great Pyrenees to protect our Meat Goat herd and the Chickens benefited too. Since we are semi-retired the only other livestock on our farm is Donkeys. Our Chickens run to the Donkeys when they frightened, especially when the predator has four legs. Our free-range Speckled...

    What are your thoughts???

I free-range 30 Speckled Sussex, 28 hens & 2 adult roosters. The chickens are always locked in their coop at night. The coop is the only place they can get their grain, it makes a good incentive for them to return to the coop. We have plenty of places our chickens can run to if they see...

    What is killing my chickens?

My husband said bring the dead birds to the neighbor. Tell them they can keep them since their dogs liked them so much. Luckily we live in a very rural area, more livestock than humans. Canine trespassers never leave, just like the song Hotel California.

How do you store your feed/scratch?

Metal trash cans with tight lids. Bought them at TSC, even got a discount on one because it was dented. They are on the chicken coop covered porch and never had a rodent problem, just a donkey problem. When we were on vacation our grandson forgot to lock the chickens gate. Our donkeys just...

    What is killing my chickens?

If you have an Extension Service, Ag collage or even your state Soil and Conservation might be able to help. Once we had several calves die suddenly and the Soil and Conservation people came down qnd checked our pasture for poisonous plants.

    What is killing my chickens?

I've never had a free range chicken die from poisonous plants. I had 2 die from pecking at the ground where Antifreeze had dripped. We didn't realize that one of our tractors had a small radiator leak.

    Space between well and coop

If you are using the water from your shallow well I would follow the 100' recommendation. Surface runoff water can bring contaminants into your well. Right now you state "all you are going to have is 4 or 5 chickens". One day, without you even realize it, "chicken math" will enter the picture...

Oops - Baby Chicks or Baby Turkey Poults ?

My husband was using a 150hp tractor with a 20ft batwing BushWhacker attached. Wild Turkey hens will wait until the last second before they abandon their nest in the brush. When he found the dead Turkey hen, crushed nest and eggs he brought the 3 undamaged eggs home and reported the incident to...

Oops - Baby Chicks or Baby Turkey Poults ?

Looks like you are going to be a Turkey Momma! When we had our farm in Upstate NY my husband hit a wild Turkey nest when he was bush-hogging. Three eggs were saved and we put them under our little bantam, Sadie. One hatched and grew into a beautiful bronze looking Tom Turkey. It was funny to...

Pinning down a rooster - does it work?

If he's free-range and that mean to humans the rooster dangerous to have around. He could attack a visitor or heaven forbid a child. To give him the someone else you're giving them the problem. I think chicken stew would taste really great.

    Rooster question

I do not pick up any of my birds or hand feed them. Once I had a rooster start to turn mean. I kept walking pass the chickens like I always did. One time he got up the nerve to try to attack as I walked by. I heard him coming I spun around, bent my knees, threw my arms out to the side like...
