My buff Orpington from cackle had me very concerned too, especially compared to my other breeds. I can confirm she is in fact a ‘she’ and we’ve been getting eggs for almost a year. I am newer to chickens so don’t want to guess on yours, but my pullet looked very similar to yours.
Thank you Mrs. K, I don’t mind having some flawed eggs. I just want to help her if something is wrong. Culling is not something we are looking forward to doing and we will prolong that until absolutely necessary.
Thank you for your response.
I don’t have any pictures currently but will add them as I get them. I e tried oyster shell and they will not eat it, I’ve had better luck with crushed egg shells.
I have a 1.5 year old EE who has laid for 18 day in a row, has a messy back end constantly and some of her eggs are ‘flawed’. Some eggs seem to be laid from the roost over night or at least before 5:30am, some have almost no coloring, some feel bumpy and thin (but not totally soft shelled).
She...
I have no clue what it is either, however wanted to drop by to say I have a hen who has been like that since maybe day 3 of her life. She is now over a year old and has never had an issue. My other hens have never had an issue so I’ve just stopped worrying about it.
BUT, I am definitely no...
We had great luck with cackle hatchery based in Missouri. We got 3 and got to select different breeds. It is similar to the previously mention shipping rates-roughly $30.
I agree that if you can connect with others locally you can ask to combine an order and split the shipping cost.
Welcome! We are near you in KC and love the addition of our flock for our children too. Someone already posted the consolidated Kansas link, it’s not super active but can be helpful for local questions/needs, etc.
We did a ‘city town female special’ from cackle that is 3 chicks but you can pick 3 different breeds if you want. I did not order an extra duck but from checking reviews it seems that it may be possible. Their customer service was great for us too.
Hello! I’m sorry you are disappointed in your current blues. We have an EE that gives blue eggs and we love them. We have a very small flock (3) so I don’t have much experience. However I hear lots about cream legbars laying blue eggs consistently. Might be worth a try. Hopefully more...
We are near Kansas City. These temperatures have been concerning us as this is our first winter with our small flock. Thankfully everyone has been fine and we are getting at least 1 egg a day!
Hello, I’m looking to connect with local KS or MO people and get tips on how to survive our first winter with our girls. I’m not sure if there is a KS group to join or whatnot but would love any help or guidance!
Hello all! I just joined but have been secretly reading for just about a year. We got 3 hens almost a year ago and have had a blast with them so far. Crossing our fingers we have prepared for our first winter.
