Do chickens get birthmarks, or pass them down?
The internet hasn’t told me anything but I’ve been curious for a while because a lot of our bigger chicks over the years have had this exact same black spot on their backs!
They’re all mixed breeds from our flock so no there’s telling what it is.
She eats layer feed I think, also sometimes black oil sunflower seeds and cracked corn.
My chickens free range so it’s hard to say exactly what she could’ve eaten but I don’t believe she had access to anything moldy. There is rat poison in our barn but those areas are mostly gated off and she...
Update. She pooed and it was VERY liquidy.
We gave her apple cider vinegar mixed with water in case it is sour crop, had to syringe it down because she will not drink.
She fought VERY hard not to have her mouth open or neck moved so I’m worried it might be something hurting her throat. She...
My absolute favorite hen is sick with SOMETHING. Absolutely no clue what.
She didn’t come when I shook their grain like they usually do. I had to look for her and found her hiding in her favorite spot in the shade. She is super friendly and will come to you if you call her but even sitting...
It could be possible that another hen is the mother, I just suspected it was hers because I see her sitting on them most. I also have a australorp hen and a small gray hen (I haven’t identified yet but looks kind of like a thin sapphire gem) both of which I have seen sneaking in to sit on or...
Thank you!
I believe the broody hen is my only welsummer hen, she looks like a gold/red to me.
Here’s my welsummer and australorp roosters as well,
And the four of their mixed offspring.
And also the two other mystery roosters that I think might be Orpington mixes,
I’ll definitely...
I have a few other chicks which are mysteries too, but not as confusing as this one. It’s the most vibrant and unusual chick I’ve ever seen.
It’s mother is a welsummer, I know for sure.
It’s father could be a welsummer or an australorp, but I have no clue how a chick would look like this. I...
The first one is my only bantam, I got the first two from a nearby chicken swap. The person who sold the bantam to us said something along the lines of it being a “bressie” but I looked it up and those are nothing like this. He came with a hen of the same breed, I’ll add an image of her
The...
I need help identifying these roosters!
The first one I’m 99% sure is not a mixed breed.
The second one is not supposed to be mixed breed but I’m suspicious of it.
And the third and fourth are 100% a mix of two different breeds, and are still under a year old.
The last two are images of...
I need some suggestions for my first batch of hen-raised chicks. My bantam, Wren, just hatched out five healthy chicks but I have a few worries.
Firstly is just what to do with them? Currently they’re in an old snake cage that Wren found in our shed and I haven’t moved it. I’ll put pictures...
