Hey all! Super new to this and kind of unexpectedly, but I have four buttons that I hatched 5 weeks ago (thread here: https://www.backyardchickens.com/threads/chaos-gremlin-tries-to-hatch-eggs-again.1642183/). They're molting a bit and getting adult feathers! They're out of the brooder and in...
Oh goodness I forgot to update! Fourth one hatched after we checked the egg for signs of life. Husband chipped a little eggshell off and moved a piece of membrane and a beak poked out and peeped at us. We scooted it back into the incubator and 15 mins later number 4 arrived.
Very much the runt...
They did it!!! (Well almost). About 630am the first one hatched. Came out to check and an egg was missing. Looked for it and found the egg and a little chick tucked in the corner. Next one hatched 20 mins later and I got to watch. Found my brain and got daughter and husband to come watch the...
All four have pipped! One has had the pip for approx 24 hours now. Not sure if that's concerning, but one was at about this time last night. Next one was at about 9am this morning and then I noticed the last two around 5pm today. So soon... we'll see how it goes! Really excited.
I candled them all and they were dark and I believe I saw movement in all of them. I tried to be as gentle as possible, put some shelf liner down and now they are in lockdown. The only thing I'm unsure of is the air pocket and whether it's big enough. At any rate, not much I can do at this time...
So a bit of an update here. One of the eggs stopped developing at about day 2. That was the "weird vessel" one. It had a blood ring when I candled last Friday, so I removed it. The other four looked to be still developing just fine, so they are all still in there. I only ever open the incubator...
I'm not sure if I'm honest. I think the eggs were cool for an hour at the bare minimum, but beyond that I'd have to ask.
I did one more candle last night when it was darker and I could see development in all five! I don't think one will be viable because the embryo was smaller than the rest...
Already heading into this at a significant disadvantage. I posted a few months ago about late button quails, which all unfortunately failed. Packed up the incubator and resolved to try again down the road. The person I got the eggs from last time said her buttons were starting to collect eggs...
Last update on this. I opened them up to see what happened.
Egg 1 was long deceased and I think stopped developing after day 8-10 or so. I couldn't really see a defined chick.
Egg 2 (the cracked one) was the most developed and I think failed around lockdown. It hadn't turned toward the air...
Pretty sure I lost them all. Did a candle just now while it was still really dark and I saw the air cells on all of them. No sign of a chick or beak in any. The one egg might have still had movement in it so I made a small hole in the air cell end…though probably pointless. Later today I might...
None hatched yet. One egg I can see a little triangle shape that I think could be a pip. I can only really see it when I shine a light and it catches what looks like wet hairline cracks. Another one had something similar but no major movement.
I caved and took the one I was on the fence about...
Hey all, I need some advice here. I'll give as much information as possible to see if any of you experts can help me (or alleviate my fears).
I have never hatched anything before. Story is my daughter's kindergarten teacher owns button quails. My daughter expressed interest in birds, so she's...
Howdy all. Been lurking here obsessively for about 2 weeks because I am very new to this and I have no idea what I'm doing (but I'm trying!). Never raised or owned chickens (or other birds before) but recently got into it. Long story short, I'm trying to hatch my daughter's teacher's button...
