Hi all, my hen has had minor vent gleet for a bit now. It doesn't seem to affect her negatively. She eats, drinks, lays 5-6 eggs/week, dust bathes, forages all normally. Her vent is not inflamed or swollen.
I do monthly checks on my 5 hens, and I noticed one of them has some matted feathers...
@CashewVulture - any chance you can give advice on how you fixed this? One of my hens has the exact same symptoms for a couple months now. She still lays eggs normally, eats, drinks, seems happy and active. But her bum looks like that, and she has some of the white liquid you're talking about.
Hey @CashewVulture - my chickens have a similar thing. Were you able to resolve this for your hens? If so, any tips and how long did it take?
My hen looks and sounds exactly the same as yours. Seems like a very minor case of vent gleet, but want to get it taken care of!
Thank you both for your insights! I'll try upping the protein first and adding more enrichment other than food to see if that works. Pinless peepers next if not!
@Eggcessive do you do any sort of withdrawal time for eggs afterwards? I sprayed a teeny amount on the back of one of my hens who had a minor surface scrape, and the Blu Kote healed it right up. She even has new feathers growing in. Now I am reading about Gentian Violet and freaking out that I...
Does anyone have any advice for how to deal with feather pecking? My chickens are healthy (I have gone through extensive testing for mites, lice, worms, etc... no issues there). There are 2 that are the main culprits, and I've separated them for a few days and reintegrated them but that didn't...
@sourland Some of the feathers in the area are only half gone, as if someone just plucks half a feather and eats it. Anything I should do? They've been living in this situation for 4 months now with no issues. I kind of wonder if it is because she was broody for so long and now she is having a...
Hi all, looking for any input on this as it's my first year with chickens. One of my hens (9 mos. old Australorp) has a small bald patch on her back (you can only see it if you push the feathers aside). It looks like she has new feathers growing in around that area. I saw one of the hens earlier...
@Eggcessive @Shadrach Any chance you have advice on what is going on or if I need to treat for something? My hen is still having some yellowish diarrhea but is having some really small solid stools because she is eating spinach. She pecked at a couple pieces of scratch, but I don't know if she...
@Shadrach and @Eggcessive - update and not sure what to do if anything now except give it time?
My hen is eating spinach, she is pecking around in some forage, and she ate a very small amount of tuna. She doesn't have interest in much water or any other types of food. She is not pooping much...
Thank you @Shadrach !! She wasn't interested in any of the food I brought out (including cheese, which weirdly enough none of my other hens were either... they usually eat anything), but I did let her forage in some of the dead grass in the yard (it's winter in Minnesota, USA), and she liked...
@Eggcessive good to know! She's was in the crate for 2 days before I put her back with the other hens. She is roosting again with them but eating has yet to resume to normal. But it sounds like that is normal. Crossing my fingers it's in the next couple day so I can stop worrying about her! She...
Thank you, @Shadrach - I broke her over the course of 3 days, but on day 2/3 she developed a yellowish whitish milky diarrhea with some small chunks of green poop in it. She is eating/drinking VERY little, so I assume it's due to this. Since she's roosting regularly as of last night, I hope that...
Hi @Eggcessive - one more question for you if you don't mind - how long do you think it will take before she resumes normal eating and drinking after "breaking" her broodiness? Yesterday she ate some eggs and drank some water, but today, she doesn't want anything. She didn't want oatmeal, eggs...
Thank you, @Eggcessive , for your feedback as always. That's good to hear. I'll try the watery feed idea. I added some water to her eggs, and she went for that too.
Hi all, one of my hens was broody (showing all signs - plucked chest feathers, laying in the box all day/overnight, squealing when I tried to pick her up, fluffing up real big, etc.), so I tried breaking her in a crate. It worked, she is no longer broody BUT while she was in the crate, her poop...
Thank you, @Mrs. K ! I hope that she breaks soon. She drank some water this afternoon/evening and took a couple pecks at some food, not much though. It's hard to watch. After a second full day in the box, I hope that this doesn't last much longer for her sake.
She also does NOT have any weird discharge from her eyes or nose. Breathing seems fine. She perks up when I come in the garage where I'm keeping her in a crate, she's alert when she needs to be.
Hi @Eggcessive - I isolated her in a crate since yesterday morning, but I'm worried that she isn't broody. I just have no idea. She isn't eating and drinking very little water. But weirdly her crop feels somewhat full? It's not hard, it's kind of soft. Yesterday her crop felt more hard, like...
