Day 6!
We decided to candle today because my patience scale is next to 0% so to make sure I'm not a liar I'll also be candling again on day 10.
Most of the eggs are developing! Woohoo! Unfortunately, Wilbur was a dud 😔
He didn't even try:
We lost 5 eggs. RIP #5, #6, #8, #9 (AKA Wilbur)...
Day 4!
The Govee showed up today. I didn't have time to get it set up until I got home, but the temp is steady at 100F. It seems that the humidity is a bit off by up to 10% so I'll have to try and balance it between what the Govee says and what the incubator says. I added more water so the...
Day 3 of my first incubation!
For days 1-2, please refer to here: First Incubation! Yay!
Not much to report. The humidity dropped again to 28% humidity overnight, but is back up to 30%. My Govee will be here tomorrow so hopefully the temp isn't too far off. I think egg #9 is my favorite and...
I had begun tracking my hatching journey on the hatching and incubating (don't quote me on the exact name) forum and it was kindly suggested that I could share my flock here instead. So I believe I'll save my initial thread for questions and use this thread as a sort of flock journal, at least...
Day 2 of incubation!
I woke up early This morning to find that the humidity was at 28% so I half closed the little valve and now it's reading 30%. Of course, I don't know how accurate it's readings are and I won't until the Govee shows up on Saturday.
Not much else to report so here's my...
Thank ypu so much! Hopefully, the temp isn't too off otherwise I'm worried that hatch rate will be decreased. Lesson learned!
Thank you for the forum suggestion. I spent a good chunk of last night reading about people's flocks, so fun!
Hello!
This is my first time incubating eggs! Chicken ownership isn't new to me, but egg hatching is so this will (hopefully) be a fun and educational experience 😁
I thought I'd keep a little "journal" here to track my journey and ask questions as needed. Today is day one. I have 16...
Okay, that makes sense. So let them rest for about 24 hours, then?
The cooler would just be one of those plastic camping ones for insulation to keep them from getting too cold or hot and attempt to limit temperature fluctuations.
Hello!
I've decided to start a breeding group of Silverudds blue with birds from different sources to improve diversity. I'm about to start my first incubation (yay!). I've been studying up and am set to pick up a dozen silverudds blue (first import lines) hatching eggs in a couple of days from...
My brother-in-laws chicks from Cal-Ranch in Utah also look like all of these. Utah Cal-Ranch is having a good laugh at all of us wondering what these mystery chicks are 🤣
These look like the chicks my brother-in-law purchased as ISA Brown. They've grown to look exactly like these. We're also in the process of figuring out what he ended up with. Sorry I'm not more help!
Also guess cockerel. My BO hens didn't have any comb until they were getting close to laying whereas my BO cockerel had a comb like that at that age. He had seven hens, but he definitely could've handled a few more. I do wonder if 17 hens would be too much for a heavy breed like a BO, but he'll...
I'm posting this for my brother-in-law.
He purchased some chicks from Cal-Ranch labled as ISA Brown. However, the chicks have feathered out white and have begun getting crests. They are clearly not ISA Brown. They look like frost white legbars to me, but I know those are rare and it seems...
7 for me! New record! My EE, welsummer, deathlayer, both buff orpingtons, and my schijndelaar (she laid 2 eggs today!)
pullets. Still waiting on my 9 month old Speckled Sussex to start laying...
Dang, I missed this by a couple of months. I'm in the market for an ameraucana roo, but I'm guessing you've already found him a new home. He's gorgeous!
I completely agree with that to an extent. I free range my chickens and understand that's very healthy for them. However, with my mother-in-law's flock, the wild birds eat and poop in the same food her flock eats from and with bird flu cases on the rise, I simply don't want to risk it, not to...
Thank you all for the replies! And thank you for the help with what's appropriate from a roo. I was surprised when he went after me. He so far has only gone after me when I'm walking through the hens, but he had three strikes and now he's out.
My mother-in-law has a splash marans rooster that's...
