I just added three little mutt barnyard hens to the flock. Two of them have obvious issues and I could use some advice.
Black one has missing feathers on top of her tail. I was told she had an aggressive rooster on her and all were treated for mites in February. I'm not too concerned but if...
I'm sorry to hear this. The two experiences I have like this was an older hen that died a month or so later with water belly. The current hen who had stopped laying i'm pretty sure was laying internally for a couple of weeks and now is not going to the lay box at all and is slowing down, and...
Do you remember what happened after that? I have a hen who has been in the laying box every morning with nothing to show for it for a week. I'm thinking she's internally laying. So far no outward signs of disease except none of the hens are interested in veggies anymore. They don't scratch...
Thanks I do the early morning if I get up early enough. I have calcium capsules so I just broke one and sprinkled it on the scrambled egg. Hardest part was keeping the other hen away from "the medicine". Happy to report I saw her drinking water for the first time in a long time a few hours...
Thank you. Gosh I keep learning something new all the time. I used to think chicken keeping was easy! On the good side, she ate the egg and calcium suggested above and I saw her drinking water for the first time in a long time. She also visited the laying box this morning but nothing to show...
Thank you so much for the advise. I have both calcium and Vit D at home so will get that to her as best I can. She's not easy to catch. If I can mix the supplements into her food it's a better deal all around, so I'll be scrambling some egg for lunch!
Update this morning, hen had egg on her face. Saw that she laid a rubber egg from the roost and had breakfast before I brought them theirs. She is not eating feed or drinking as before, but is scratching around some and otherwise looks strong and happy. She eventually ate some of the yoghurt...
OK, thanks on the DE. I don't think it's really working on the nightly cock roaches either...
Would a hen survive 2 weeks and still be acting normal with EYP?
OK,thanks. I just posted a full report. Hard to believe this little, young bird could have liver issues already. I'll try to get photos in the morning when I can grab her again.
We just lost a hen to WB two months ago. She was older. Now we have the following:
1) What type of bird, age and weight (does the chicken seem or feel lighter or thinner than the others.) - She's always been small and thin, laying giant eggs, But now is not quite 2 years old, Longhorn with a...
I'm following. Is there an update? We lost a hen to water belly two months ago and now may have another one starting. That water balloon feeling below the vent between the legs. One site recommended oregano oil, so I'll post looking for more info on that. Would like to know if your hen...
I forgot to tell my favorite egg story, courtesy of my dad who was in the Navy during WWII. He went ashore from the USS Niblack in Malta, but the maps he was retrieving to helm the ship were not ready yet as it was the lunch hour. A young Italian soldier offered to take him home for lunch...
Hi there. My first hen and rooster came to live in the abandoned playhouse when I was about eight. Our dog killed the rooster and the neighbor's dog killed their hen, so for nearly a year we shared the remaining pair back and forth across the street. My neighbor was the only one brave enough...
Any update? We've lost two hens over several years to water-belly, ascites. I always think they're egg bound until the baths do nothing and the hen is still alive after a few days, but eating less and walking less. Hope your girl is doing better by now.
