    The Hummingbird Haven

Been off BYC for couple of weeks. We have company coming the first week in September so we’ve been hard at work making everything look spiffy. The yard has been a work in progress - I knew when the construction on the new house was going on we’d be fighting bare dirt on our lot for a long time...

It just ain’t summer without my hummers!! When I was first inundated with them several years ago, our local paper did a story on my yard being certified as a National Wildlife Habitat. People stopped me all the time, saying “I didn’t know we had hummingbirds here!” Soon flower beds with the...

    The Hummingbird Haven

I’ve got hummers!!! Saw the first one, an adult male Rufous, on Sunday evening. I should have been in the house packing for my Monday trip to the hospital in Billings, but sat on the porch all evening watching him. Got home Tuesday afternoon and Ken got me settled in my deck chair on the...

    The Hummingbird Haven

Hello there!!! You have the moats…..any hummers? We haven’t seen a thing here. But then the whole lot has been reconfigured for the new house we have on it now, and they tend to look for feeders where they fed last. No flowers planted here yet either, so this year may be a bust. How are you doing?

Usually those bee guards on feeders are yellow, have you noticed? Bees looooove yellow. So do hornets and wasps. I took them off and painted them red. I just used red nail polish and let it dry and cure for a good week before I put them back on because I worried a little about off-gassing. I...

It takes them awhile to make it this far north. And when the wildflowers in the mountains are in full bloom, they aren’t always in a hurry to leave there. Southern Wyoming gets them way earlier than we do - we’re 6 miles from the Montana border.

How exciting!!! I’m getting so antsy here for the first ones. It was 78 degrees here today, but only supposed to be in the 40s the rest of the week. I’ll wait until mid April to put the scout feeder out, I think.

You can also mix up a week’s worth and store it in the fridge. I do that all the time.

Nope, but it’s still too early here. I need to start checking the Hummingbird Migration Map weekly again until they start getting closer.

    The Hummingbird Haven

The only thing that works in Wyoming winters is patience. We don’t get any hummers here until late spring anyway. That said, I have had a couple of scouts as early as April and had one persistent BlackbChinned who was still here into November.

I get so jealous of folks who get to enjoy hummingbirds all year long! Up here we have such a short season for them. Glad to have you join us, Jed!

    The Hummingbird Haven

I take such good care of them that my yard was certified by the National Wildlife Federation as an official Wildlife Habitat, just because I have so many of them, and so many varieties. :lau But I’ve been doing this for so many years now that I also know they are a little like chickens…..they...

    The Hummingbird Haven

Oh, I’ll do it! Like I said, I’ll just have to get creative. The big issue is the layout. We had a skinny 10x60 mobile home. The short side ran north/south, the long side ran east/west. Now we have a 29x84 house. The layout is just the opposite. We have very little actual land left. I have...

    The Hummingbird Haven

I’m afraid this year may be a bust for me. We all know they return to familiar places. Year after year I’ve hung a red tablecloth on the clothesline in late March, along with a scout feeder. But this fall we built a new house on our lot, with a totally different configuration from the old single...
