    The Hummingbird Haven

Looks like they're Anna's hummingbirds, as that's the species that stays in the area even through winters. I generally have between 1-3 through the winter near the house, as I keep replenishing feeders during cold weather.

    The Hummingbird Haven

I'm ready every day. :) This past Sunday one of our resident hummers came up to the porch and buzzed me, I was wearing red sweatpants and obviously looked too appetizing!

    The Hummingbird Haven

I have almost no activity. They tend to congregate here in spring then move on north in summer, then come back through in fall. I usually have 1 or 2 birds that take up long term residence but I haven't seen or heard any in the last month or so. So I'm only putting out a minimal amount of...

    The Hummingbird Haven

Yeah I couldn't see them working in truly cold climates, but typical winters here don't dip too far below freezing, so just a little heat would be enough.

    The Hummingbird Haven

I should probably invest in a few of those. I've heard of people wrapping the feeders in Christmas lights too, to just add a minimal amount of heat, but I have the flat ring shaped Aspects feeders and wrapping those seems too tricky. The way I've dealt with freezing is to have double the...

Thanks for the info, I'll increase the sugar ratio from now on for winter time!

    The Hummingbird Haven

I don't get a lot that stay in winter, maybe 2 or 3 at best. Some years it might only be 1, sitting on top of the willow tree. Sounds like 2 at least this year, since I can hear them zooming around one another. One was waiting for someone to clear off the light dusting of snow on the feeder...

    The Hummingbird Haven

That'd make sense as well. :) Thankfully sugar solution at the usual 4:1 ratio already has a slightly lower freezing point, so it pretty much stayed liquid from after lunch on, so I stopped swapping out the feeders. But this is why I keep extra feeders on hand - much easier than trying to thaw...

    The Hummingbird Haven

Not a bad idea, especially since melting snow (or heavy rain) can seep into the holes and dilute out the sugar solution as well.

    The Hummingbird Haven

Never too early for hummers for me, since they live here year round. I felt sorry for them this morning after we had 6" of snow last night (the feeders resembled sno-cones, with snow mounded all the way up to the hanging hook) so I've been swapping feeders in every few hours due to freezing and...

    The Hummingbird Haven

I put out 16 oz at a time (2 feeders that hold 8 oz) and they're finally slowing down. About a month ago they were emptying the feeders every 2-3 days, now it's every 5-6 days. There's usually a few hummers sitting up in the willow tree over the chicken run, so they just divebomb the nearest...

    The Hummingbird Haven

Hmm, place or plant colorful flowers nearby to help entice them to the feeders?

    The Hummingbird Haven

Aww... I'm just sad that there doesn't seem to be any nests in my yard this year.

I'm currently using the Aspects 8 oz Highview feeder (https://www.amazon.com/Aspects-430-Hummzinger-Highview-Hummingbird/dp/B0080DJNFW/ref=sr_1_6?crid=1B3I5EXFSPRE8&dchild=1&keywords=aspects+hummingbird+feeder&qid=1584389536&sprefix=aspect+humm%2Caps%2C235&sr=8-6) Really like this feeder better...

    The Hummingbird Haven

Loved checking out all the photos on this thread! Wish I could take some but our hummies (we also call them little bastards, because they're so pushy about getting fed) aren't cooperating and my camera doesn't zoom well enough. Not 100% sure what kind we have but I assume they're mostly/all...
