Given you've not written different I assume Leonard has settled in with your bunch of nutters and dusters rather well. I'm seriously pleased if it is the case. I'm faced with the possibility of introducing a new male to the field hens now Henry is dead. I've not had to do this in confined...

Oh, I agree about the dogs. You may remember Ruffles go killed by two Huskies and they tried to kill a ewe. Further up the mountian the farmers were shooting any dog that wasn't on a lead on sight. It's not the cats and dogs, it's the people who keep them, or rather don't.

I'm getting one egg a day currently. That's just about enough to cater for my recent baking interest.

Unfortunately Lozzy my dislike of cats hasn't meant I haven't met any and worse still, had to live with them at various points in my life. It sometimes seems they're like rats; you're never more than a metre from one.:p (I'll get thrown off this thread if I don't shut up :D)

This keeping chickens business, it's not as easy as some would have us believe. It takes time in my experience to get things right for them and us. Bear in mind there were five years of Catalonia for me before I started posting here and most of the horror stories and the deaths aren't recorded...

More coops always helps. However, the amount of land the chickens can access needs to be considered. What I would suggest is you consider making/have made a maternity/isolation coop at this stage. It will give you much more felexibilty in how you deal with the broodies. They can be reasonably...

Sounds like you're getting tribes.:D Bantams and full size is an easy split and for those interested in creating a multi coop system with small free ranging tribes, this is the route to go. I've banged on about this very split often enough. I found that the full sized roosters would attempt to...

I hope you have better luck than I'm having with Henry and Mow. It's turning into a full time job.

My preference is to let the senior hens sit and hatch and only on the eggs they laid if possible. Some hens are happy to take donations but ime the senior hens are less so and even roll the donated eggs out of their nests sometimes. I have had multiple broodies sit and hatch (you may remember...

Finding out who makes the best mums and more importantly what makes them best can be a traumatic learning experience for all. Yes it can be very disheartening when things don't go as we would wish. Our expectaions of hatch rates and mums abilities is very high I think.

You're doing all right Ribh. Failure to hatch is something one gets used to. There are so many reasons why it happens, most of which one can't t much about. If you're going to range the birds from dawn to dusk then predation is something one must learn to deal with as well. Once you have a male...
