Slowly but surely my rat snake Ziggy seems to be calming down. Having to take things very slowly with her. Last night I just sat with my hand in her tank for like 15 minutes, touched her lightly as she would crawl by, etc. She is getting SO BIG holy cow. I'm used to noodly corn snakes, it's...

Wow I haven't been to the BYC forums in a while... I had to put my 19-year-old cornsnake Noodle to sleep back in August. He had a presumed kidney tumor that was big enough to put pressure on his GI tract and not allow passage of anything. Later in the month I got two baby corns (because it'll...

Next month I go to an arts camp. Assuming I don't catch covid there (I am going to be masked all the time and staying in an RV rather than in the 'dorms'), I plan to go to our local ReptiCon in October. It'll be my first time going! I need some heating ropes and that seems like it'd be a place...

Aaaaaw hognoses are so dang cute! They were one of the first local wild species I got to work with at the nature museum I volunteered at back in the day. Very nifty critters. My cornsnake Noodle is still doing just fine! He'll be 18 next month :)!

Oh yeah the American toads are definitely out now! Found a big fat one in my flower bed when I was cleaning it out last week :). I've got spring peepers around too, actually managed to see one on my back door! Snake-wise I've seen black rat, garter, and browns, and plenty of Carolina anoles.

Back to heaters, I second the ZooMed UTHs! I had one for my snake that I used for 15 years. It still works fine and is in great condition, and I have it in my stash of extra pet supplies in case the new heater dies. The only reason I'm not still using it is that I needed a larger size heater for...

I'm impressed that you've taken such good care of a beardie with such serious injuries to have it live so long! He looks good :) I had a cricket bite me once, it wasn't pleasant!

His x-rays looked really good, too! No signs of arthritis in his many many many vertebral joints :p. My older cat Shadow would love to play with Noodle, but he hates her. Whenever she gets near his tank he 'rattles' his tail. I've never let them interact, never even gotten Noodle out of his...

My cornsnake Noodle is coming up on 17 years old! I had to take him in to work a couple weeks ago because I fed him and then he didn't poop for like two and a half weeks and he was really mopey which just wasn't like him. We x-rayed him and didn't see anything obvious so I gave him some warm...

See, I waited until I was out at college to get my cornsnake. My mom wouldn't let me get one while I was still at home, but I knew if I came home with one she wouldn't force me to get rid of it (because you take care of your animals and don't dump them when they're inconvenient and all that) :p...

When Noodle was a baby he didn't understand that the food was IN the bowl, NOT the bowl itself.

Yeah the warning against feeding live is more in regards to risk to the snake than any behavior issues it might cause. 'Vicious' behavior is far more likely due to other factors. I thaw out the mice for my cornsnake and put them in his feeding box, then I put Noodle in there and close it up...

@KDOGG331 I take it you've never been bitten by a small rodent before :p. Their skulls are designed to gnaw through just about anything. Snake flesh is nothing compared to hard woods and plastics.

@FortCluck oh man I'm so sorry :(. That's exactly why I always recommend people only use dead (whether f/t or fresh-killed) or stunned prey with their reptiles. I know some people are all about the 'mental stimulation' from having to actively hunt prey, but there's plenty of ways to provide...

@FortCluck I feed my cornsnake f/t small adult mice, 1-2 mice every 1-2 weeks depending on the season and his activity level. He's not big enough for anything more substantial than that!

Yeah this is why I've never been to our local reptile show! There are too many cornsnake morphs that I'd just love to have and I know myself well enough to know that if I went to a show, I'd be coming home with more snakes than I really have room for :p.
