I lock the food up at night. The deer eat it right in front of me. They also broke the feeder... and after I “chase” them off , they turn right around and go back for more. They don’t even wait until I’m in the house
If the rats are getting at it, at least they have the respect not to do it...
I could do that, and I might, but making the feeders with the PVC elbows seems like less work and fewer materials currently. I am worried about them knocking the feeders over though. If only @WannaBeHillBilly would just come and “solve” my deer problem for me
Oops it was @EggWalrus who wanted...
Your duck eats mice? No wonder the deer are running scared. Mine won’t even eat a slug that’s too big and aggressive...
Unfortunately I have seen a rat recently. They get big out here. I have traps but none in the chicken area
I tried that too. The ducks and hen with chicks caused chaos with coming and going. I had an entrance on each side but it increased fighting and chaos inside...
Although it was when the chicks were younger and I was worried about them being trampled. Now that they are older it might be worth a...
I have a roof enclosure currently over the food, and I tried building barriers along the top part to keep the deer out but they are surprisingly crafty at getting in anyway. There are several little ones that can fit any way
I
our feeder is out in the pasture under a little roof structure. At night I just cover it, but they’ve been bolder lately and eating it during the day.
I’ve thought about putting the feed in the coops but I worry about rats.
Unfortunately that’s not going to be “easier” then making a feeder out of garbage cans and pvc elbows. We priced how much it would cost to deer fence our chicken pastures and it was very expensive. We are currently researching alternatives but for right now, it’s out of reach
We tried putting chicken wire around the feeder cover but it caused chaos with ducks and an angry mama hen with chicks. Crowding and limited exits. We tried putting up 1x1s in strategically around it to block the deer out, but the deer just ripped them off.
I want to make some of those no waste chicken feeders out of garbage cans and PVC elbows to protect my feed from the deer but can the ducks eat out of them? They tend to grab a bill full of food and throw their head back and I can see the pvc elbows messing with their ability to do that.
