Best tip i have is draw the eyes first! I never really have messy sketches but I do a messier lineart first then go over it to clean it up!

Oh yea gimp can do alot, personally I don't recommend it for a full art program but its great for textures/editing! I used it alot to make memes in middle school as its the only art program/editing software that wasnt blocked
