You might find some recessives hanging out under the plain feathers if you're lucky.

So if this is a boy you'll have a promising breeding pen. Or, if it's a girl you'll need a buff-ish male.

Do you have any girls who could be considered buff?

If it's a boy you could start doing some heavier culling and let him father the next batches.

I got this at a significant discount from their "scratch and dent" section: https://brinsea.com/p-533-ovascope-egg-scope.aspx You might watch for one because I can candle effectively in broad daylight with this device.

It took me about 5 years. Yeah, I'm thinking of moving the 3-week chicks into the integration pen early so I can stick some spare males into the brooder. But the night lows aren't *quite* low enough.

You might live in the US Southeast if you have ever thought of 90F as a cool day. ;) I've been laughing hysterically at the people panicking over "Hottest Day Ever!!!" It's been a cool spring and early summer for us. More days in June and July so far that have been under 90 than over 95. I...

☕ Be careful. It's too easy to have a slip up when you're tired and stressed. (I have a bandage on my thumb to prove it).

I'm not showing any fertility issues, but I have noticed that a couple of my splash boys -- who are more likely to be more inbred -- are smaller than their blue or black hatchmates. I believe that you're more intentional about selecting for size than I am though.

At the moment, at least, I have no ability to separate out flocks for breeding.

This is a good point. I'm ready this year to add outside cockerels to my flock this fall because Rameses is breeding his granddaughters now. Fertility is fine, but I'm leery of creating problems.

Even my broody had a late quitter this weekend. Nothing looked wrong in the eggtopsy.

I've got one like that. It looks fine until I go to crack it to eat and then I'm cleaning the counter. I do not enjoy a handful of egg.
