I think there might be some on the chest that have white tips. Can you see it in the picture or am I imagining it? If so, the other half of my question is if he might be carrying full or split mottled. I've learned to tell them apart on solid blacks, as our splits often have spotty chests but...

He could be mottled or split, yes, but he's definitely also Paint... See how random his pattern is? His mother was Paint. So I was just wondering if he is *also* mottled. The genes could work together but I wasn't sure what would be stronger... That's why I came to ask if anyone sees mottled...

This guy is a cute accident... Do you guys think he is only Paint, or is he Mottled or split to Mottled as well? Mother is a Paint Easter Egger (White Leghorn X Mottled Ameraucana) Father was Black Ameraucana X Mottled English Orpington. So both parents were split to Mottled. He looks...

She / he is adorable! Hoping for an update as she / he grows 😘 I had a really cute Hackle chick I posted here because I hadn't seen his down pattern before, but he grew into the same red/gold we've had a lot of. Brat.

Split Mottled chicks have patches of yellow down, so if the father is the Black Mottled and he's split to Lav, and the mom is the Lav, this would make sense. My project chicks from my Black Mottled Orp hatched in all sorts of fun colors, turned out he's split to Lav and Chocolate, and some of...

I don't mean to pile on, but the easy answer is that if you want to know the parentage of birds, you should breed with a solitary rooster in each pen. A bit more planning at the front of things makes for a much easier time at the end. Also, couldn't these picture heavy inquiries go in your own...

You always post too many pictures. It's hard to pick any single image to respond to. Mosaics are not an officially recognized breed, but there are a group of breeders working towards that goal. They shouldn't be bred any which way and still use the name. Mosaics must have blue ears. But blue...

The comb and wattles are too large and too dark. Mosaics are partially fibro, that allows lighter skin on top of dark skin, so it shines through blue instead of black. The pictured hen looks paint to me rather than patterned.

Is a floppy comb hard to breed out? This is about the Smurf (blue face) project. I have 2 boys to pick from out of the WFBS hatch. They're 7 weeks old tomorrow and funny little birds. One of the two boys has been squeak crowing since 4 weeks 😂 He (Dumbo) has the best ears so far... almost...

If you want something specific, you really have to be picky with what eggs you set or chicks you buy. The spots are from the mottled gene. Mottling is recessive. Chicks with one mottled parent can have some white markings at hatch and their first feathers can look mottled (not always, there's...

Thank you! I already sex the Hackles by headspots and color so I should have realized, now I feel silly. 🙃

I'm sure this has been asked many times before, sorry, but I haven't seen it... What genes actually make for autosexing that breeds true?

How much does hybrid vigor decrease in the F2 generation? I have two bators full of eggs from the LegO project (E.Orp + Leghorn). The first generation grew so fast it was a little shocking. They've turned out a good size. I'm selling off the hens to make space, so I sure hope I set enough eggs...

Just a friendly reminder, it might be problematic from a disease burden standpoint to compost dead birds. Even if it's not accessible to your live birds, other critters can track bacteria and viruses over a big distance. When we have a loss, we either seal up chicks and put them out in the...

Why, though? I just have to ask this of someone because these AI fake animals are all over my fb lately. I don't understand the appeal of pretend versions of real animals when the real deal is also beautiful. If it were a creature that doesn't exist at all, I could totally understand, like...

Love this little one! I haven't seen this color before in the chicks. The dad was darker. I'd love to know what he will look like feathered in? Dad:
