So they sell for 8-12 grand on the used market depending on condition. If it's in good shape and you can flip it, might be worth it. Or if you want to ride it. If it's hammered, finding parts may be trouble.

Smoking in the engine bay is prolly valve cover gasket leak on that side. Smoking from exhaust is rings or valve seat. If there's no glitter, could be the oil pump is weak, the pickup tube in the pan is partially blocked, or it's just worn out. You can see if a heavier weight oil helps...

Change the oil. Like now. Pull the filter and cut it open. You're looking for glitter. That sounds like top end knock. Lifter or pushrod. I hope. Have you ever dropped the pan and looked at the pump pickup screen to make sure it's not clogged? May be time. Low oil pressure and that clatter...
In the states that would be a lexus IS. the 2j powered ones are hard to find but the 4 cyl early 2000's ones are all over the place here. 5-8k USD depending on condition and options
Depends on what you're planning to do with it. Lots of rice out there for a song, a fox body mustang is a solid option as well. Later G body cars are still plentiful, Bugs, small pickups. Just really depends.
Suby swaps are super popular these days. Whole thing will drop in with an adapter plate and a reverse cut r/p for the transaxle. 250+ horses and 5 or 6 speed for very little money if you can pull the engine and trans out of a wreck. Then slap some forced induction on it and pray :p

I mean, it isn't, but just wondering. It's just a little 1641 with worked heads, cam, and dual kads. Not fast but It runs happy and at 190F at 75 on the freeway in the summer. Also means my kids are learning stick. A rarity these days.
