What are your frugal and sustainable tips and tricks?

Our chickens don't get many kitchen scraps, poor things. Occasionally we'll have a bit of lettuce or part of a tomato that gets past us, but we're pretty good about eating leftovers. Recently I was grounded from cooking for a whole week because we had so many leftovers, but we ended up eating...

What are your frugal and sustainable tips and tricks?

In our house, whoever puts groceries away just knows, and automatically puts new stuff at the back of the pantry and moves old stock to the front so it gets used first. We've even taught our kids this, that's just how it gets done.

What are your frugal and sustainable tips and tricks?

I put leftover chili on top of leftover alfredo noodles from a restaurant for a lunch the other day. Didn't expect it to be wonderful, but it turned out to be an elevated chili mac!

What are your frugal and sustainable tips and tricks?

Exactly! Sometimes I pretend I'm a contestant on Chopped ... what can I make with these weird ingredients that don't belong together at ALL? Lol.

What are your frugal and sustainable tips and tricks?

Sometimes it's the little things. I joke that it's against my religion to run out of stuff. So I often buy two of things instead of just one. One to use and one for "backup." Then when I run out of the one I'm using, there's already a spare in the pantry (big room in the basement.) As I bring up...

What are your frugal and sustainable tips and tricks?

Well ... maybe somebody else has had better results than I, I can't say it won't work ... just that the effort was not worth it for me. Otherwise, composting was wonderful for me. I had horses at the time, and between their manure and the waste hay that fell off the bales, and garden waste, I...

What are your frugal and sustainable tips and tricks?

I tried composting dog poo once, it was just nasty and stayed nasty. IMO, only the manure of herbivores composts well. Yes, I know chickens are not strictly 100% herbivores, but dogs eat a LOT of meat. So I don't use their poop and I would not recommend it, if asked. It's just :sick.

What are your frugal and sustainable tips and tricks?

Do not understand the need for makeup; have never worn it. We damp the woodstove down at night; the propane furnace kicks on through the night as a poster above said, to keep the rest of the house (and pipes) warm. .. We try to keep trips to town, 30 miles each way, to a minimum... try not to...

What are your frugal and sustainable tips and tricks?

Just guessing but.. no fires, no hurricanes, no ice storms, no tornadoes, no blizzards, no floods from rain storms ... what am I missing? But also, as you say, no water....

What are your frugal and sustainable tips and tricks?

Good points, gtaus. We are definitely not water restricted here but you're right. In some drought-afflicted areas you can get into some serious and legal trouble capturing rain water, so know your local laws. Thanks.

What are your frugal and sustainable tips and tricks?

In this unusual warm weather we've been having, I've seen bees desperately trying to help themselves to the chicken feed crumbles. They're rolling around in it and trying to pick it up and carry it away. What to do? I googled. Sugar water doesn't provide the proper nutrients. What they really...

What are your frugal and sustainable tips and tricks?

I just found this thread so have not read the whole thing but here's one thing we do. We have big plastic trash cans set up to catch rain water. We bring it inside in smaller buckets (empty kitter litter containers, so that's two) and use it to water plants and the animals. They really like it...
