We had 2 so called tropical days with temps around 33°C . My hens decided the nestbox was too hot. I dont blame them for not wanting to get roosted. The nestbox in the playhouse and the large nestbox in the run are much better in sunny hot weather. It seemed Black needed to lay an egg when I was...

Pearl went to the neighbours today. Maybe to see if there were any strawberries left for her. Didn’t count on the dog, who immediately came in action to play with the funny creature from next door. Pearl didn’t need much time to fly back to the coop. 🤣 🚀 Probably she won’t go there again for a...

Hard to tell. She was reasonably active. About what I image one can expect from an 11 yo chicken.

Black, Katrientje, Kraai and Ini mini. Cleaned it. The gland was slightly red. Several feathers came loose when I cleaned it. Ini mini was not amused. After spraying with a wound disinfection she was glad I let her go.

Thanks for attempt to diagnose. I will examine her tomorrow. Can I use a wound spray if I see an infection? If it’s a tumor theres probably not much I can do for her.

Ini mini isn’t fit. The second time this year she behaves as if she is tired day after day. Her feathers look a bit strange too.

Today the chickens gave me a very weird present. 1 Normal semi-bantam Amrock egg. 2 Dutch egg, probably Kraai 3 Dutch egg, Black or Pearl 4 Fairy or fart egg from one of the Amrocks judging the colour.

It been a weeks since I posted on my own thread. Not very much to tell about. No sick chickens or changes in the flock. A broody (Katrientje and Pearl as follow up) for a few days/a week, this time of the year is normal too. Still getting 4 eggs a day on average. In the Netherlands they say: “No...

I can adjust the moment it closes. Sensor setting is standard 6. Setting 1 closes/opens with less brightness, but I forgot how to use the buttons to set it to the right closing moment. In the manual are instructions how to adjust it. From the manual:

Issues on the playhouse coop after 9 months. The playhouse is not as sturdy as I thought. The wooden slats in the playhouse are loose slats in a framework. In the back panel there are gaps because the playhouse is not placed neatly level. Fixed it with hammering and a larger screw. The small...

Another benefit of having two coops: if I have a broody , I can close the broodies favourite laying nest. The other hens still have other laying nests to lay their eggs. Katrientje is broody now. She keeps nagging (asking) to open the pop door to the nestboxes. Poor lady. Unfortunately for...

Yesterday evening the chickens were quarrelling a lot around roost time. When I went over to look I found the chickens had rearranged who slept where. The last month sleeping arrangements: Extension: Katrientje, Kraai, Black & Pearl. Playhouse: Ini mini, Janice, Gin & Tonic. ^^ Yesterday...

My chickens always wipe their beaks after eating wet food like yoghurt. It helps trim to trim their beaks. But somehow Ini mini doesn’t do this much. I don’t know why she never took care of her growing beak properly. I helped her a little last year. But it's hard to get the tip of the beak off...

Honestly, I have no idea what happend. A guess is a piece snapped off and she started to shape her beak on bricks or paving stones herself.

Last week I made an appointment with a friend who has chickens to trim the beak of Ini mini. Her upper beak became problematically long. The appointment was postponed. Today I was flabbergasted bc a miracle had happed. Somehow she got smart and handled it herself!

Last week I worked a little on the chicken coops and runs to eliminate a few flaws. I stapled a piece of EPDM on the lower part of the playhouse coop where the rain came in that dripped down with North West storms. Now the rain is diverted to the soil. Hopefully the water doesn’t come inside...
