    Hügelkultur Raised Beds

The only perennial I'm currently growing in a raised bed is asparagus. Since only the root area is perennial and the top/ferns die back each winter, the compost I add on top each year doesn't seem to create a problem. The asparagus shoots poke through that extra layer easily. I suspect that...

    Hügelkultur Raised Beds

I match that 1-2" annual drop with my non-hugel 1ft tall raised beds. That is normal for organics breaking down and plants absorbing each year. The chickens are great for making compost to re-top the beds each year.

    Hügelkultur Raised Beds

Not sure that is a great idea. People use logs because they aren't treated with nasty chemicals. Avoid any painted or chemically treated wood.

    Hügelkultur Raised Beds

Nice. Thanks for the thread. I haven't wanted to build hügel mounds in my small yard, but I'm going to add a 3rd raised bed this next year and this info will be very helpful.
