I'd heard of this for carrot, but not for anything else. This time, I bought a different variety of chard, soaked the seed overnight, and planted them in pots full of compost. If this doesn't work, I'll figure that the garden gods do not want me to grow chard.

Seeds not sprouting was a big topic on the other garden thread. A lot of them came from Baker Creek. :( I am going to replant chard for the 2nd time today, and see if I get a better germination rate. So far, I'm only 2-3 out of 20. I soaked the second batch, and it was no better than the first...

It would be a challenge to get netting over them. I'm thinking I need to look for something. Not the flimsy 1/2" black plastic stuff. That gets all tangled in the plant (used it on blueberries last year) and you end up tearing off leaves and buds to get it off at the end of the season.

For anyone who has cherry trees... how do you keep the birds from eating the cherries? This is the first year we will get a cherry crop, IF the birds don't get them. Does the reflective tape work?

All the starts are out in the garden, in dog crates that are covered with sheets. 46 for a low tonight, then lows of 50s in the next week. Tomorrow is supposed to be partly cloudy, so they'll get some filtered sunshine for awhile.

I'm going to use Tomato Tone on my 'maters and peppers this year. It's organic, made by Espoma. I've used their Tree Tone on my fruit trees, and I think it has made a HUGE difference to my cherry trees. Their soil acidifier has made a HUGE difference to my blueberries too. Anybody else use that...

I've heard they're easy to find with a blacklight. They fluoresce.

24 degrees down by the blueberries. In about 3 hours, we'll see if covering them up worked.

Same for me, @tripletfeb. I've done all I can to protect/save the blueberry and cherry flowers/buds. Now it's up to hope and luck.

Hubby found a metal rack out at the old house that is nice and sturdy. It'll be a trellis for something in the garden. Peas or beans, perhaps. I'm also making a trellis above the fence.
