We took some pictures of the silkies yesterday but can't get them sent from my wife's phone to my email. After 4 sends and nothing came I gave up. I'm going back when she returns home with the trusty Nikon and fix that.
My silkies are doing quite well in their outdoor digs. I do need to get on the ball and build them a silkie only coop and run very soon now. The difference in size is widening between them and the full size kids they hatched with. So far they all get along fine even if the silkies do seem to...
My silkies are in the new coop. They have a brooder with heat if needed and a place that is very draft free they seem to like. They even seem excited to be in their new digs.
I have a new large multi purpose hoop house that mine are going to this coming week. We will see 80° days soon. I just need to get hardware cloth on the door and out they go.
A 2x4 in front of the nest boxes wide side up should be sufficient for their sleep area then. I have this crazy plan to make the next boxes modular so when there is a broody I can move her into a stall where she is alone on the same nest box of eggs. Now she has a private poop and exercise run...
I've got to get a new coop built ASAP for the silkies. I'm going to make it so that I can slowly introduce new kids as the get old enough to mingle with the adult kids. Designed around the see but not touch principal. My wife explained that one to me many decades ago before we got our first...
I need to find a way to get good pictures of the last hatch. I got two beautiful pullets from an Easter Egger Roo and RIR hens. Golden feathers with black hackle and wing feathers. The silkies are adorable. The one with the feathers growing backwards seems to be the ring leader of the whole...
I've got a local egg customer who has some silkies saving eggs so I can set them on the 9th of March for the Easter Hatch Along. I have 3 incubators full of eggs now. One is set to hatch on the 8th. l may be cutting it close. Worst case scenario is I will have to fill the 4th one and that is a...
I'm sure one of the five will be a terror on two feet of a rooster. If I have all pullets I will not complain. I'm watching TSC and will go to Rural King tomorrow to see if they have any silkies. I never thought I could get so hooked on a small chicken but I'm star struck with mine.
Once I get a silkie rooster I'm hopefully going to breed him to some big Cornish Cross girls or big Cochin girls. So far my 5 little silkies are all acting like roosters wanting to control the brooder and they are doing a pretty good job of it. Just maybe some will be bossy pullets. We are not...
Fluffy butts have some pasty butts again. Going to have a roundup first thing in the morning and deal with it. They cleaned up there egg yolk today very quickly. They remembered what it was.
I gave the little brats a boiled egg yolk last night in a small plastic pan. They looked and looked from a safe distance and one finally walked up to the edge and started at the yellow stuff. The he backed up as none one came up with him. He finally got up close again and attached it with a kill...
We gave ours the run of the full brooder that is 4x8' and they use it. The heat lamp is still own but they don't seem to use it at all. The sun room has an independent heating/cooling system from the house and that is set to keep the room temp at 65-70 degrees. The heat lamp keeps the whole room...
That's what I'm hoping for. I will get some updated pictures soon. Those fizzle frazzle ones are so cute. I think one of those has a topknot on its head. They can run so fast around the brooder now ma gets on one side and I get on the other to catch them. They will settle down with age as they...
I just got my incubator #1 fired up tonight. Just my eggs. I'm not ordering any more hatching eggs until the weather is warmer. At least the first week of April. I want more silkies in the worst kind of way but out of the five I have I'm hoping for at least 2 future mama hens.
I have 6 big...
All eggs going in this time will get an OdoBan dunking. Most of the eggs are very clean but three or four will get a gentle wipe with OdoBan water and then all dunked for a minute. I am going to see about some local Silkie eggs tomorrow and I will feel better if they are dunked.
I felt like the Hovabators that I use are cheap enough I could use the extras as hatchers. Ideally if there was a need I can set 41 eggs a week with 4 Hovabators and never need to clean the one used for the first non lockdown days.
