Pictures of the older babies from Oakley and Chrissy. The 2nd photo is of the mystery chick. Looks standard sized, lavender, single comb. I wonder what breed or mix it is. Hoping she's a pullet.
3 of the incubator chicks hatched. Two cuckoo, one of which has feathered feet. One is from my...
I'll be honest I had completely forgotten Smokey was sitting on eggs. Which is why I was surprised to see chicks in the nest this morning. All but one have hatched and the last has pipped.
Now unfortunately more than half (silkies) have single combs. At this point I'm not sure if it's easier to...
7/8 of Chrissy's eggs hatched. 2 black, 3 blue, 1 of the frizzles, and a cuckoo or blue cuckoo male. Not sure why so many blue silkies all of the sudden. I was under the impression I only had one blue hen and she couldn't have layed all the eggs, but maybe my dominant white which I suspect is a...
Yeah, those are probably the silkies you're talking about. No doubt they'll be beautiful chickens.
One of Chrissy's chicks hatched in the incubator and a few more have pipped.
Took a picture of Oakley's babies today. I think the mystery chick is going to be lavender. The white one almost looks dominant white. The feathers have a brownish off white color with flecks of black. That's odd considering the pen it's egg was collected from has no dominant white birds in it.
Thanks.
That's the plan! I'm just not sure whether I should keep Chrissy and her new chicks separate from Oakley or put her back in Oakley's side of the coop. But they'd probably still try to steal each other's chicks.
The store bought eggs in the incubator were all unfertilized. I have 9 developing eggs left in there. 8 mutts/mixes from my relatives and 1 bantam brahma mix.
Oakley is officially off her nest with 5 chicks. 2 silkies, 2 mixes, and 1 mystery chick from the store.
Chrissy has caused SO much drama in the past 2 days. She's a great mother and she'll adopt anything that moves but that also means she is OBSESSED with Oakley's chicks. She completely...
I checked Chrissy's eggs and thankfully they're still moving inside. A blue looking silkie hatched under Oakley. Probably a chick from my blue cuckoo Smokey. If it's Smokey's it's a sexlinked pullet.
I'm gonna be so mad if Chrissy just messed up her clutch that's due in 3 days.
Oakley got off the nest with the 2 oldest chicks and Chrissy decided to leave her 8 developing eggs to sit on Oakley's 3 youngest chicks and unhatched eggs. I haven't been home for at least 3 hours, I have no idea...
We have our first two babies!! The blueish one is the mystery chick and the light one is from my mixed breed flock. I'm wondering if it might have the same thing going on with its color that Aphrodite did from my previous hatch. Cause I still don't have any whites in the flock.
I saw a small pip...
I removed an egg from Oakley's batch because it was obviously clear and I think the blue egg is most likely empty as well.
But we have our first internal pip!!
It's one of the store bought eggs. Hopefully we'll get to meet him/her tomorrow.
The frizzle eggies are doing good. Since Smokey's silkie eggs are very light, I could see 7/8 are starting to develop. One I'm gonna look at again in about 2 days.
The incubator eggs pretty much all have those spotty/porous shells, so they'll probably be a nightmare to candle in the beginning.
On second thought, after candling the blue egg, I wouldn't give up on it yet. It's a lot darker than it was on day 1. Even though I see no blood vessels, more then half of the egg is dark. For day 14 I'd say it could very well be developing. We'll see.
Oakley's batch:
9/10 are definitely developing (including 2 of the store bought eggs). The 3rd store bought egg is blue and I'm having a hard time seeing through the shell. I would guess it's probably empty.
Chrissy's batch:
8/8 are developing. Oakley decided to switch nests with Chrissy and...
Doing my last hatches of the year.
First I have 3 silkie eggs, 3 store bought eggs from some local farmer, and 4 mixed breed bantam eggs. 10 eggs in total, due to hatch around 04.05 - 05.05. They're under my broody hen Okakley, so I'll be calling it Oakley's batch.
Second I have 6 silkie eggs...
