oops, hit send too soon. That's $540 worth of eggs from one skinny little chicken who has never been sick or hurt or needed anything in particular. She's my super-heroine!

Hello all. Just reporting in that my five year old Leghorn has just started laying again! Same thing happened last year - one month after the solstice - days getting longer and ... eggs! Last year I also had my blind (or something) Brahma who I lost this summer. Good ol' Pinky is the last of our...

Hello NE Kansas folks, I'm posting on behalf of a friend here in Lawrence who needs to give up some of her backyard chickens after repeated complaints from a neighbor. I believe there are Buff Orpingtons and Barred Rocks and ? They are not show chickens, but have been well-taken care of, are...

Final update on the flystrike victim. As I had posted, Blinky's wound was completely healed and she seemed like her old persnickety self so I put her back in the coop with no problem. On the 4th of July I found her dead on the floor of the coop. We put her in a plastic bag on ice in a cooler and...

Happy to post with some good news since I usually just post with problems! Our hen RIR Blinky, afflicted with flystrike and under care since the beginning of May has actually recovered! 10 days ago there was just a small open wound area and what turned out to be old skin around it. I trimmed...

Update on Blinky- Well the wound continues to shrink- sort of. The problem is there is always green poop on the area (circled in purple), which is a considerable distance from the vent (circled in orange). I am now convinced that the poop is coming out of that area and not her vent. The first...

Thanks to those following this and helping. Especially for continuing to look at graphic photos. Here's the latest. The green arrow is pointing to her vent. The blue circled area is a sort of crust that is raised up from her skin. The yellow area (roughly) is the part that is still open. The red...

Thank you. I don't this there is any smell now, but I have a bad cold (on top of everything:(). There are probiotics in the electrolytes I've been putting in her water. I've also mixed in a little yogurt with the food at times. I've noticed also that the edges of the wound, especially at the...

Hello folks, I think I'm losing the battle with my fly-struck chicken. Here is a photo from mid-day yesterday (about the same today). She is eating a little on her own now, which is good. I'm still giving her water/electrolytes by dropper as well as nutridrench. Finished three more days...

Thank you. I hope it won't mess things up to have not given the penicillin last night. I think I will give it to her right away and then change the daily time to now instead of evening. I'm also going to try to find a non-prescription topical similar to silver sulfadiazine.

I finished 7 days of injected penicillin. Blinky is more alert- stays standing up most of the time, there is no smell. But she is still not interested in food and keeps pooping soft green stuff that looks like pesto sauce. Should I continue antibiotics past 7 days or is she just on her own in...

Someone else on the forum suggested debriding the dark tissue with a cloth. I've been wiping the dark tissue with betadine and gauze and keeping neosporin slathered all over twice a day. Penicillin injection once a day. Today will be 5th day.

This was from the day before yesterday. The hen is perkier, standing up most of the time, but not interested in eating. I think if it weren't for the nutridrench she'd be gone. Hard to give injection when there is no breast to speak of. I've been giving it to where the wing and breast muscles...

I truly appreciate the help of those who have given me advice here. Blinky is eating and pooping some. It is green and liquidy. However, the last stuff I really saw her eating were some dandelions I threw into the run last Friday. She must have already been in bad shape, but she ate them. I am...

Sorry about your daughter. That's tough. I was going to study medicine but I got too grossed out with mammalian dissection in high school advance biology. Too bad- might have come in handy now. At least I can give poor Blinky an injection and clean the open wound. She was quite perky just now. I...
