Baking soda for odor control! It works!

Awesome--It think I'll head over there this afternoon. I need some other stuff anyway. And whew!! It really does make a difference--I went out with a girl friend last night and left the ducks to my husband. I was in a hurry so I didn't add the baking soda, and the brooder STINKS this morning...

Baking soda for odor control! It works!

Once you wash it down, you'll have to add more baking soda--it will wash away. Let us know how it works! My brooder stinks a LITTLE this morning, but it hasn't been cleaned in over 24 hours, so even under the bedding the baking soda makes a huge difference. I'm out of baking soda though...

Baking soda for odor control! It works!

Thanks, guys! I also believe it is incredibly safe. However, in the enclosed environment of the brooder, where they are on it 24 hours a day, I think there is potential for it to burn them a little. One of mine has rough, slightly cracked little feet after two days on it, which may--and probably...

Baking soda for odor control! It works!

Okay, great tips--thanks for all the feedback! I now have the baking soda UNDER the bedding rather than on top, and we'll see how it goes. After this feedback and further thought, I had begun to worry about it burning their little feet over time, so I'm glad that was mentioned. Let's see how it...

Baking soda for odor control! It works!

Good question... maybe I should put it under a thin layer of straw? Would that make a difference? It does seem like it would be abrasive at minimum...

Baking soda for odor control! It works!

I thought about the breathing thing when I cleaned the brooder this morning--with my face down in there right after I poured baking soda in the bottom, it made me cough a little. In the future, I think I will apply it only when the ducks are not in the brooder, and wait for it to settle before...

Baking soda for odor control! It works!

Thanks! I'm pretty happy with my results. I'm sitting next to the brooder here that has not been cleaned in 24 hours, and can't smell it at all. I laid the stuff on thick--I can still see it in patches under the poop. But it's so cheap, I think I can keep this up.

Baking soda for odor control! It works!

Yeah, they are stinky! Ducks were my first farm-yard pet, so when I raised chickens for the first time I couldn't believe how CLEAN they were, lol! Now we have quail too, and I love having a brooder full of quail babies because you only have to change the bedding every few days or so. And the...

Baking soda for odor control! It works!

I hadn't thought about the plants thing--but is it okay to throw in the compost? The duck bedding all goes in the compost... we have acid soil around here so it seems like if the pH of the compost is altered, it wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing but then... once everything's composted, isn't...

Baking soda for odor control! It works!

Okay, so I tried to get PDZ at the feed store, but all they had was Stall-Dri and it was twice as expensive as the same quantity of feed... I just couldn't do it! lol So I decided to try the old stand-by: Baking soda. I hesitated, because no one on here or in any of my reading seemed clear on...
