We found a pretty effective way to not become to attached to some chickens while others we do. Some are named names like Lola while others are named Over Easy or Egg Salad or Fajita or Enchilada. It's harder to get attached to them when they are named for food and are a constant reminder of food.
The top one and the white chick chest bump each other all the time. The other two have always been the first to run toward our hands when we put them in the brooder, while the other two have always stayed back.
It'll be interesting to see what they turn out to be.
Pretty sure this 4 week old is a boy, but not sure. I posted in the silkie thread but only got one response so thought I'd post here too and see if anyone has an idea. This one is the only one that is showing red in the comb already! It was also the one that had the head twitch thing going on...

That would make me mad too! We use every part of the animal when DH hunts or we butcher. We have pets who are fed raw as much as possible and actually one of the major reason why we got into chickens to start with. The only part we don't use is the feathers, although the new kittens...
That might work .. chicken addiction. My major is Marriage and Family Counseling/Therapy. I'm getting my cert for Chemical Dependency Professional, just trade the Chemical for Chicken
I am so coming to you guys for paper ideas!
That's awesome! Wish I could get some extra credit for grad school ... wonder if I could argue the effects of hatching eggs on the family and or marriage lol
That is just so sad. Unfortunately people can be stupid and you just cannot fix stupid! I love having the chickens and would love to hatch out a bunch but worry about situations like you had. I have a couple of neighbors that I am going to try and hatch eggs for but not sure about selling to the...
I put eggs in my new incubator after it had been running for over 48 hours and able to hold a steady temp and humidity.
I'll be very surprised if anything is developing. These eggs sat on my count, fat end down for seven days. It was at least 80 degrees several times in my house.
I had the...
I'm finding a lot of articles and scientific studies that point to Vit E deficiency as the cause of many types of different illnesses/neuro type problems.
My collection now contains a digital scale that weighs in grams/kilograms/oz/lbs, Poly-Vi-Sol without iron, Chick Booster, Rooster Booster, and Nutri-Drench.
I currently am giving all the baby chicks (10 days old) Nurtri-Drench. Starting tomorrow everyone is getting it in their water.
The 10...
Here is a video of what the chick is doing.
I ended up getting Chick Booster
Guaranteed Analsis (per 10 gram scoop)
Enterococcus faecium 62,500,000 CFU*/10 gm
Lactobacillu acidophilus 62,500,000 CFU*/10 gm
Sodium (1.12 %)
Potassium (0.40%)
Vit A (200,000 IU/10 gm)

I do eventually plan to get a better incubator. Money is tight and to be honest if I was hatching out chicks to sale or had to buy hatching eggs I would not have even thought to try with a stryrofoam one.
Since I get the eggs for free and soon will be able to hatch out my own eggs it is not so...
One of the 10 day old chicks is doing this weird head shake (side to side but it is slow). My daughter called it a tick, like you see in humans that is an subconscious movement. It is not continuous but it does happen several times a day. This chick has a vaulted skull. He/she is eating...
For those of you who hatch and use a wood burning stove as your only source of heat and use styrofoam incubators, how do you keep stable temperatures? We have a single wide mobile home so there isn't an interior room to place it in.
I bought an incubator for cheap and going to give it a try. It's the Little Giant 9300 still air.
Don't tell DH I'm here till he goes hunting/fishing several times
