Benny, that's amazing stuff! I have a pomegranate near my back door, but I think it's an ornamental variety that only bloom and doesn't bear. I've never had any fruit from it, at any rate. We have a native portulaca, too: (yeah, this one is in my pasture)

Last time I saw substantial rain was last night (and yesterday afternoon, and yesterday morning . . . :th*splat*). August is "monsoon season" around here; we get seabreeze fronts bringing moisture in from the ocean. There have been times in years past when the rest of the state was dealing with...

Gee, Tara, if I didn't know better, I might think you were happy about those lambs. An easy birthing, a beautiful pair of lambs, and a boy showing lots of promise . . . "challenges" may build character, but there's a lot to be said for the deep pleasure of everything going right!:celebrate...

This is the other bird - as you can see, she has a lot more black. When BB2K saw her coloring, she named her Cowabunga , or Bungee for short. I'm pretty sure we have Silver in these birds; we have had Birchens and a couple of white hens with Columbian markings (one such hen I suspect may be...

I'm sure someone can correct me if I'm wrong about this, but it is my understanding that the Bantam folks accepted the Serama a few years ago in white only. I haven't heard of any other colors being added, but that doesn't stop the fans of the tiny birds from breeding them in every color and...

Hey, Tara!:frow BB2K and I have been puzzling about this for a few weeks, and I figured if anyone I knew could tell me what's going on, it would be you. Can you tell me, what color/pattern is this chicken? (Yeah, I know, he's a mess - he was just literally in the feed pan before I pulled him...

I know what you mean about the smell. We have several citrus trees in our greenhouse; and right now it smells like Heaven in there. You'll have to let us know how the distillation works out. We have Carolina Jasmine growing everywhere around here, and I am often tempted to try that when it's...

More pointless trivia - didja know that there are hundreds of thousands of feral camels in Australia? Mostly dromedaries, but apparently there are a few Bactrian camels as well. Or that there used to be a lot of confusion about the related-ness of the South American camelids? Many years ago, I...

Meaningless trivia moment - Flipper's signature call wasn't a dolphin sound; it was a sped up recording of a kookaburra. "Kookaburra sits in the old gum tree Merry merry king of the Bush is he Laugh, kookaburra, laugh kookaburra Gay your life must be"

Quote: Yes, apparently it can be done; here you see a video showing the technique to some students (sorry, I'm afraid I don't speak Japanese, so I have no idea what is said) A little bit more about the video: http://www.sciencealert.com/watch-a-chick-develop-and-hatch-outside-of-the-egg

A belated but hearty congrats you all, Tara! Have your feet started to touch the ground yet, or are you still walking on air? I absolutely love this picture: This looks like a happy dog, willing and eager to please. And so gorgeous! I reckon the people who were voicing concern about the...

I was so tickled when I saw these guys at the fair last night - this is the first time we've had Jacobs. One of the ewes had an accident and broke a horn while getting unloaded. Poor babies, life has been rough for them lately; they had to be evacuated because of the flooding earlier this month.

Tail wagging? Tara, you might get a chuckle from this: Last year, I was getting my animals settled in at the fair when one of the Superintendent's assistants sorta sidled up to me. She said, "Bunny, you know a lot about goats, right?" "um, well, I know a few things, yeah," I said, rather...

Can't count past 4? Don't reckon any of your kiddos have read Watership Down, have they? The rabbits couldn't count past 4 either, so they had a word, hrair, which meant any number more than 4. So you not only have hair sheep, you have hrair sheep!
