Help! Crack at wrong end without pip

I didn’t know vitamin E deficiency could cause neurological problems until I was researching for my duckling. Vitamin E deficiency causes something called “Crazy chick disease”. You can read about it more on this forum if you search in the search bar. It aggressive many poultry species...

Help! Crack at wrong end without pip

I’m so sorry about the ones who didn’t make it. It’s so sad when babies die. It does sound like your incubator is at fault - or just the thermometer. For the baby with neurological issues, I would give it vitamin E daily. Vitamin E deficiency can cause neurological issues in poultry. Also if...

Help! Crack at wrong end without pip

You can put the chick in a bowl or cup lined with paper towel inside the incubator to finish absorbing the yolk. If it’s just the umbilical that’s attached, that’s not going to absorb. It will just dry up and fall off. I can’t tell from the pictures.

Help! Crack at wrong end without pip

That’s really good you can’t see the yolk. Watch those veins closely. It might be ready to hatch within the next few hours! Then you can start removing more shell and if you come across more active veins, just stop and try again in an hour or so I’m happy to help!

Help! Crack at wrong end without pip

Yay! Veins definitely look like they are clearing up and getting ready for hatching! How’s the yolk, can you still see it? I think I would wait until those veins basically disappear. I think it’s safe to wait since it can breathe. But I’m not 100% sure .. that’s just what I would do. Hatching is...

Help! Crack at wrong end without pip

Can you still see unabsorbed yolk? You have to wait for that all to be absorbed before it’s ready to hatch. How about veins, do you still see active red veins? You probably will have to help him finish hatching when he’s ready, I agree.

Help! Crack at wrong end without pip

You could make the egg shell cap with a safety hole in it to go over the air cell end to help protect the yolk. Then pop it off to check how it’s doing.

Help! Crack at wrong end without pip

Glad it’s still alive! Did you get a picture? Make sure to keep the humidity up and the membrane moist so the yolk doesn’t dry out

Help! Crack at wrong end without pip

https://www.backyardchickens.com/threads/goose-incubation-hatching-guide-completed.491013/ Here’s an article that talks about opening the air cell end. Of the egg. Fingers crossed for your baby!!! I agree, I would open the air cell now because I’m concerned that you aren’t seeing signs of life...

Help! Crack at wrong end without pip

How long has it been since the cracks appeared? It’s on day 21 now, right? Is it chirping, moving, or clicking at all? I think if there is no progress in the next 12 hours it would be safe to start enlarging your safety hole very slowly. Stop if there are active veins. Alternatively you could...

Help! Crack at wrong end without pip

Do you see any bruising around the cracks? If it has actually cracked the shell it should be able to breathe. Otherwise you can make a pin sized safety hole above its beak. Unfortunately I’m more experienced with duck eggs. I had 2 duck eggs that tried to hatch on the wrong end. One was able to...
