It’s always so sad to see an innocent animal go for reasons that can be treated! I’m so happy for you that she’s doing well, and I hope she stays happy and healthy for a long time.
Here’s a dead butterfly that flew into my cute chick’s little run a few days ago. They squabbled and were very...
Beautiful!
I’ve read that they eat their body weight in mosquitos every day! And that their natural life span in the wild is around 1 year. They’re really wonderful arachnid friends.
I’ve never seen a male black widow before, I wonder if they keep to the shadows? The females are ruthless...
While pruning hibiscus for some homemade lemonade I came across this mantis. It failed to catch lunch, perhaps I gave it performance anxiety by turning on my camera :gig
It sounds like your garden has a wonderful little ecosystem of its own going on! I would love to have so many beneficial insects, for both my plants and my poultry.
I’ve only seen one black widow this year but I’ve seen MANY fiddlebacks. The only to spiders I kill on sight. When I take down mud...
Finally was able to capture a photo of one of the thousand cicadas (Superb Dog Day Cicada) that’ve been all over our property this year! So pretty, and I love the noise they make.
A weird tip, but if you collect cut hair from the barber or groomer and place it around your garden or any other plants you’d like to protect, it keeps most critters away!
Hair is compostable as well, but that’s certainly not for everybody :)
One year we had so many toadlets you couldn’t do anything to keep from stepping on or running them over, poor things. But that was over 10 years ago! I’ve hardly seen any toads this year and I’m thinking it’s due to the lack of junebugs.
The underside of a zig zag garden spider (rescue hen in...
I have seen many ants this year as well! But as long as they’re not fire ants I’m not bothered. I love to watch them build and collect for their nests.
Lovely mantis. What is the second bug? A giant horsefly?
I tried to take a photo of some sort of crab spider I saw on the chicks waterer, but as soon as I noticed him the chicks did too! He was gobbled up by my little Favorelles. Anywhere my hands go their curiosity follows. Whoops :th
I’ve definitely got to get rid of that Lynx spider then! Honey bees are too few and precious to let them be eaten as a midday snack. I happened to see a (particularly territorial) mantis today, but I believe I’ve only seen around 3 total for the whole summer.

I’m always on the lookout for curious little insects while I’m tending my flower garden or raised beds. I love seeing bugs I’ve never seen before, and I love searching online in an effort to identify them.
I’d love to see your insect finds as well!
Here are a few that I’ve seen in the last week...
