Pipd's Peeps!

Save Them All Happy Birthday GIF by Best Friends Animal Society

I just lost Hank to a hawk. Damn. He wasn't my first choice for my silkied Blue Cochin group, but it was nice to have him as a backup. I wouldn't wish for any of my birds to be killed in such a manner, but if only it had taken a Black boy instead of one of my precious few Blues.

The hawk goes hungry, regardless, as I'd caught it in the act early enough and scared it away before it could eat. There's snow on the ground, so I just cooped up the hens and remaining silkied Cochin boys. I'll have to do some pen rearranging so we can just stay locked in safe and sound, I guess.

Poor boy. I hadn't taken his picture in so long that this makes him look like he was a scrawny little thing. :(

:hugsSorry to hear that.

Thank you, I'm okay now that the shock has worn off. ❤️ Poor Hank... I think I'm going to prioritize hatching from the silkied Blue Cochins first this year, if the two Blue pullets ever start laying.

I did really quickly rearrange the deck and get everyone set up on there this evening. We've got a couple days just above freezing incoming, and then it's supposed to be pretty cold for a while again, so they should be fine hanging out on the deck and in the coop while we wait out this hawk and hope it moves on. :fl

May I join?

Of course! Anyone is welcome! :frow

My birds have been locked away since fall. But, not too long ago a deer was hit on our road and ended up in the field across from us. I saw lots of activity from birds. There were crows, hawks, and even a couple of bald eagles! I'm sure at night other animals feasted on it. It fed a lot of animals for quite some time. Now, it's just a heap of bones so picked over the wind blew it across the field!

Whoops, I missed your post somehow! It's always interesting to me to see what kinds of creatures will take advantage of a kill like that. Also, a lot of people don't realize that bald eagles are frequent roadkill eaters, too! Actually, as far as raptors go, they're quite lazy and prefer to find easy food that way as opposed to catching food for themselves. Not exactly the most majestic means of dining for what is usually considered an elegant bird! 🤣

I popped over here to post because I'm very excited!! I've just placed an order for hatching eggs for the Easter Hatchalong! :wee What for? Ahaha... Well... naked neck bantams. Okay, I couldn't help myself! I've just always found naked necks interesting and as bantams? 😍 I can't wait!!

And, of course, if the silkied Cochin pullets are laying by then, there will be plenty of room in the incubator for them as well! 😁 It's gonna be a fun hatching season!
