    Help deciding breed layers

Hello BYC fam, I hope I am posting on the correct thread because I have 2 separate yet intertwining questions. Question #1: I was wanting some recommendations on good egg layers to add to my small flock. I currently have 2 Rhode Island Red Hens and 1 Rhode Island Red Rooster… now that may...

    Adding to the flock

Our new girls are now 14 and 12 week old. We have them in their pen inside our chicken run. We have had them in the run with the older girls for 8 days. We are thinking of releasing them into the flock in a few days. Should we wait longer before we integrate them? What are your thoughts?

Introducing year old hens to a younger flock

I was able to get 6 one year old hens. 5 RIRs and 1 black Maran. My current flock is 4ish months old. With them being older do I have to wait awhile to fully introduce them? They already lay eggs of course so I don’t want to have to keep them in the smaller outdoor pen for too long. They are...

    Adding to my teenage flock.

Hello, I haven't quite gotten the hang of searching yet, so I am sure it has been asked once or twice before and if so please link me to that conversation... BUT my question is one of my sweet babies (they are about 10 weeks old) is a rooster and as much as I am willing him to be a hen he wants...

    Are they ready YET?

I’m super impatient to getting my little girls mixed with my big girls. I’ve been wanting a bigger flock for a while now and I just want it to happen already! The big thing is I’m wanting to do a coop Reno for them but I need to take my separation wall down first. I just need to make sure I’m...

    New chicks to the flock

The time has almost come for our not so little girls to leave the brooder and join their big sisters outside. We have 2 remaining from the original flock, about 4 years old. One red, one Easter egger. When they’re ready, we have 5 new (about 3 months old) reds to join the flock outside. Any...

    ??New Member??

Not really, but never got around to introducing myself. Just why I began raising chickens, not totally sure, but it has been interesting to say the least. That old yarn about chickens being dumb, those people have obviously never raised chickens. Stupid they are not, limited, yes, but they'll...

    Adding adult hens

I added two adult hens to my flock of 9 hens and a rooster yesterday using an “afternoon” method where I kicked the flock out of the coop mid day, added the new girls and at bedtime opened it up and let them all settle together. But I normally let my hens free range during the day. They are...

    Polish bantam chick, advice!?

So I’ve adopted this crowned polish bantam chick, a friend found her in a parking lot abandoned. She couldn’t keep her so I offered. I have two birds already, (a red and a naked neck)and they get along great. I’m just concerned about whether or not they’ll eat along or they’ll hurt my lil girl...

When to let a new hen free range?

Hi! I recently adopted an adult hen that was a bit of an escape artist in the city. We have plenty of room out here and my 6 birds free range. I am her 4th home as homes 2 and 3 were small flocks that pecked the heck out of her. My girls are not yet laying and they have no problem with her. I...

Raising Chicks to 2 year old Hens in a Small Coop

I have 4 hens living in a 8 x 8 raised coop. Due to the small size of the coop I am considering building a small makeshift coop in my run (8 x 40). My idea is to house the established hen in the temporary coop in the run while the chicks grow. Run is well built and bird netting on the top. Have...
