This morning I found my broody hen sitting on a wrong set of eggs. I was out of town all day and she may have been off them all day yesterday and overnight (night temp was low 41*F) She has been sitting on fertilized eggs for 4 days before she got off them. Is there hope?
We seem to be having trouble this year with our hens… 1/2 of them are first timers so I know that can affect hatch rates but we’ve never had this much trouble... So far we’ve had 1 first time hen hatch 9/10 chicks all perfect , another 1st time hen hatched 2/14 chicks, one 1st time hen hatched...
I set eggs under my broody yesterday but today found her on different eggs. I’d set her up in her preferred corner in a small pet carrier (with door removed). End of day today she was in the other nest box on a fresh clutch of today’s eggs and the ones I’d given her had gone cold. I put her...
So, there was a pigeon sitting on a chicken egg, but she decided to give up at 10 days. I put this chicken egg under her on October 1st. I'm wondering if I can save the chick? I have a TrioCottage incubator that I have, but I don't have any other fertalized eggs.
If it's too late it's okay :D
I have a hen that becomes broody every year and will give up on the eggs after about a week. Sometimes she’ll come back to them for two more days later on, but usually she won’t. The eggs spend more time cold than warm, so I don’t trust her to lay on them anymore. I keep snatching them and...
Hi, my barter white this morning was displaying all signs of being broody, but after a few hours she hopped off the nest and never came back to it. Is this normal for them to snap out of it so quickly and by themselves.
Hi all - I am a first time chicken owner and I had no intentions on hatching chicks but one of my hens had other plans. I’m sorry for the long post ahead but I’m trying to give as much info as possible to get an answer. If it helps, I live in New Zealand (Northland)
I can’t be sure but I think...

I had a broody mama hen (she’s polish and it’s her first ever time) who hatched out 6 of her coop mates eggs and then left the nest with the babies. She left 4 halfway into their hatch or pipped. A buckeye hen who has never been broody (it’s a year of firsts for me since literally half of my...
Hello All! I wanted to stop in here because I’m fairly new to broody hens (I’ve had one) and one of my ameraucana hens went broody just before memorial weekend. She went broody, fairly obvious. We added some eggs under her and let her sit. She was doing well, not aggressive, she let me pick her...
I have a second time mama who is laying on eggs. Tuesday, June 7th will be day 21 from when we believe she started laying. I moved her into a dog crate within the coop in the same spot she was nested down to try and keep her from stealing eggs. We did this last year when she went broody and it...
I had a second lavender Orpington go broody the last week of March after my other Orpington was raising chicks. I quick bought eBay eggs (Red blue laced Wyandottes) to put under her. They didn’t ship for a few days and I didn’t receive them till April 4th. My bad mistake for first time shipped...
I don’t know if I’ve meddled too much, worked too fast or if the situation can be corrected but I need advice for grafting our Blue Wyandotte to accept feed store chicks.
Last year she went solid broody for three weeks and I successfully gave her three feed store chicks. It wasn’t the easiest...
Hello everyone!
This morning when I went to see my chickens, I found that my broody hen had traversed to the other section of the coop and couldn't go back to her eggs. :( She has her own section in the coop for brooding as she's the smallest of the hens by far (a Silkie) and tends to get...
I have a broody hen who was sitting in some eggs. there are other broody hens where she is sitting. I went to do some stuff for a few hours. As of 3 minutes ago, I checked on her and she was sitting in another hens clutch. Her eggs are lower than room temperature. I put her back and I am...
It's my first time with a broody hen. She didn't come out of the house on Saturday, only sitting on two eggs. We added some in slowly over the weekend so she's up to 9 eggs and today is the first day she didn't lay herself. This morning I marked them since she's been faithfully sitting, so that...
So I might have done something silly. I had a hen start showing signs of broodiness (wild look in her eyes, puffing up her feathers, hanging out in the nesting box & she had plucked out all her chest feathers). She's 1 yr old now, and went hardcore broody in the fall - I couldn't break her! - so...
Wintertime broodiness! I don't get it, but what can I do but give them eggs? I'm now up to 5 full time broodies and I'm just going with it instead of breaking them (2 others hatched in late Dec and mid January). Many days the highs don't get above freezing. Living on a mountain, the snow is...
Hi BYC Community,
My head hen went broody & I grafted chicks to her. At 2 weeks she moved them into the hen house (Omlet Eglu Cube) with my one other hen. At five weeks she stopped mothering them and would nip at them to get them to leave her alone. Now both she and the other hen chase and peck...
So we let our broody hen sit on a clutch of eggs, some hers and a few from the guineas. A week ago a single chick hatched. Broody sat for another day or two, then gave up on the rest and has been in mommy mode with the one chick, scratching in the coop all day. Last night at lock up, I heard...
I need some help.
We got a quick flash flood here in Arkansas. The place where we keep our chickens are rabbits is in an area with a fresh spring and when it rains. It floods the run.
The neighbors pond overflooded behind the coop and there was calf high water flowing very fast and dlooding...
