I have read great things about this designer mix and I would LOVE to get one.
The one thing that concerns me is prey drive, I have a farm and lots of vulnerable animals here. I could of course get a young puppy and socialize it with the livestock, but I also have two LGD, and I don't want this...
i’d originally planned on a great pyr as i like their appearance, personality, size and natural guarding tendencies outside of livestock but i’ve read about some instances of them randomly killing their poultry, and i know they were bred to mostly guard large animals. i know goldshaw farm has a...
Hello!
In a few weeks, we are planning to get a great pyrenees mix puppy to train into a guard dog. Aside from not *really* knowing how to train a guard dog, it hit me that we have a Rooster who could cause some trouble...
Generally speaking, this Rooster is the best we have had. He will run up...
Our family has a flock, we currently let our 5 Week old chicks run around in a metal pen while the girls free range. We have plenty of vultures the fly around our house, but usually not many hawks or other Ariel predators. About 7 days ago we had a hawk (I think a Red Shouldered Hawk) try to go...
I just witnessed something amazing. I heard loud raucous calls from my flock of Guinea Hens. I raced to the window and saw them surrounding a young coyote and herding it toward the river. They chased it across the river and stayed on the bank screaming at it for a long time. By that time I had...
Just wondering if there’s a smaller breed of dog that’s good for guarding chickens? I know corgis are good, but what else? I’m looking into buying a dog but also using it to guard the flock, especially since we want them to be free range in the day :)
Hi, I am Tammy aka harmonychick,
We live on acreage but the predator birds are getting our ducks and chickens almost weekly. I am now looking for year-round chicken tractors to make and pull around daily. Since we live where there is snow and high heat they need to be versatile and safe. Any...
We have a problem with coyotes. I lock my flock up at night but occasionally the coyotes come through in a day- and three times I lost my entire flock of chickens! I’m looking at getting a dog that will stay outside with my chickens. I think that any big dog will deter the coyotes from jumping...
I apologize if this is in the wrong thread - if I need to move it please let me know.
Here is some background before the questions. Coop is currently being designed and built, so no hens yet. We plan to get 12-15 hens. We have plenty of room, so there will be an outside run possibly 400-500...
I'm interested for future use.
Any tips on where to adopt or purchase good LGD lines and how to train them?
Are these dogs also your companions (indoor/outdoor) or does their job relegate them to mostly outdoor life?
What about other animal guards?
I've looked at some guard dog articles, questions, and threads, but most focus on just the guarding aspect and even say guard dogs shouldn't double as housepets or get attention outside the guarding area. (which makes sense) I know, with training, many breeds can be taught to look after...
Okay...so my neighbor has chickens too and two Shepherds. The dogs roam their yard limited by invisible fencing but their pen is strategically placed next to the chicken coop. Set-up seems to work divinely to deter would-be predators.
So...here's my story...with pictures. :)
I have a 9 yr...
We have cows, donkeys, chickens, guinneas & goats. Goats & 7 chickens "free range" on 2 goat-fenced acres with a livestock guard dog, Noah. He grew up with chickens, and he makes me feel more secure about free ranging the chickens. The chickens are not in my yard, because my other (old) fur...
