We've had chickens for 30+ years, but run into a new problem. We have 19 Black Australorp that are 18 weeks old. About 3 weeks ago we introduced to our main coop with 3 hens and 1 rooster. They get along fine and finally got the new ones to go in the chicken house at night. After about 10...
Why do my Orpingtons (bantam and regular) prefer to huddle up on the floor at night instead of roosting on their perch?
I’m busy drawing up plans for a luxurious coop for them to sleep in (this will be inside of a very big catio-inspired run/enclosure/aviary in my backyard). They’ve been in a...
Hi, I know there are a few threads here already discussing this subject, but they all seem to be about young chickens.
Let me introduce my flock as this could be part of the problem; I have six Swedish Flower Hens, 1 dominant rooster + 3 hens (1 1/2 yr old) and two hens that are only 5 months...

What is The Rockin' Roost? It is a free-standing, 3 - Row, Chicken roost, that really ROCKS!
The Rockin' Roost is the answer to SO many issues facing Poultry-People of today.
Does your coop have little...
I have six hens. Two Americana, one black australorp, three isa brown. They are two years old and each lay an egg a day.
One chicken is laying her egg in the day while roosting. Not sure which hen but not the Americanas. This is new or different behavior from last year.
I have three nest...
Hi I have 6 hens all about 12 weeks old. They have been doing really well about learning to go into their coop at night. At first they just slept on the floor of the coop so I started helping them up on the roosts at night and they learned that pretty quickly as well. For the past few nights...
Hi all,
I have an old coop my dad and I built a few years ago for a flock of chickens we didn't end up keeping for long. I recently got back into having chickens and have owned a small flock now for almost a year. A lot of them unfortunately fell victim to a coyote a few days ago, so I'm going...
Hello all, working on the interior of my coop for my 12 BSL chicks.
I am planning on doing 2 6’ long roosts, one a foot higher and a foot behind the other.
I am aiming for 16” from the wall for the back roost. So 16” plus 12” plus 6” extra for in front of the front roost.
All said and done...
I am raising out a batch of heritage turkeys (mix of Bourbon Red, Black, and Midget White) and they are doing great. After two years in a row of them roosting on top of the chicken coops and other buildings and pooping and subsequently fouling (fowling?) my rainwater collection systems, I have...
I just moved my four 11-week-old chickens into a new pen I built, and I used a board (laying the wide direction) for the roost. They don't seem to want to stand on it, and are kind of squishing together in the corner.
Any tips to get them to use the roost? I don't want any suffocated chickens -...
Hi all, can someone tell me what breed this pullet is and confirm that she is in fact a girl?
I got her from TSC and her comb and waddles have developed a lot quicker than everyone else’s and they’re so big and very red. Was hoping that means she was going to lay soon but notice today what...
Hi all, sorry if this is in the wrong forum. I recently got 3 almost 1 y/o (44 weeks I believe) Golden Comet hens that seem to refuse the higher roost ladder that I bought them. They used the ones that came with the pre-fab coop but they're only about an inch off the ground and a couple of the...
I have not been able to find answers I am looking for in the search so I'll try posting. I am currently planning a new coop/run build and getting chicks for the first time. I wanted to build a brooder in the coop with the adults to keep everything in one area. I would have the chicks completely...
hi , FELLO CHICKENEERS,
enclosed are a few images of my ongoing attempt to build a coop .
The coop is being designed and built on a frugal budget of zero
To my surprise I’m somehow keeping within budget.
Firstly I need to point out that I’m defo...
I finished my new coop a few months ago and now am realizing it might be nice to add a poop board to keep the coop a little cleaner any suggestions on how to do that
(Picture of roost below)
Ive decided to make a new coop as my older coop was getting a bit cramped and ive noticed how it was falling apart. I have a brahma cockerel and some brahma pullets in the flock so i wanted to put their bigger bodies into consideration. I have realized that my brahmas have a problem jumping up...
i need some suggestions on how to setup perches for our chickens. We will have 20 chickens sleeping in here and need to make sure we have some roosts setup.
My initial thought was to put several 2x4’s going left to right. I want to take advantage of the height of the coop.
What do you think?
Hi! Thanks in advance for your help and advice!
my coop and run are predator proof. We have an Omlet auto door. As you can see in the pictures, the chickens roost on top of the coop on the hardware cloth instead of IN the coop. This makes cleaning harder and sometimes they lay an egg up there...
