One of my ducklings has broken their leg today. Not sure exactly when it happened, but the mum did have a moment of panic and it may have been crushed/stood on against the coop.

The duckling is just under a week old. Picking it up and feeling it, the leg is completely limp. It can rotate freely on pretty much every axis. As much as I would love to play Dr, and try to nurse it back to health, that option really isn't viable. Regretfully, it appears the best option at the moment is to put the duck down, as much as I would hate it.

My other option is to pretty much leave it be, have it hang around in the coop, and pray it doesn't find somewhere to get trapped in and die.

Is there anything I am able to do?

So sorry!

Can you take a picture of the leg or even draw a picture of exactly where this break is? My guess is without seeing where it is, a splint could be made for it. I'd use a straw or split a popsicle stick in half the long way, then cut to length, and Vetwrap.

I would be sure to be giving it vitamin water, and some extra B-Complex as it's trying to heal. We have liquid B-Complex we found at Walmart, and a human dose is a full dropper, so we used 1/4 of one for a chick.

You sound like you're under time constraints, but a splint, once applied, could be left on for days, just checked a couple of times a day to be sure it's not cutting off circulation.

I cant provide a photo at the moment, but the best way to describe it, have you seen the Harry Potter movies? It's basically like Harrys arm when it breaks, just entirely limp.

In terms of vitamin water or any other supplements, its not really feasible for the time being. Will it actually heal? As i said previously, it seems as if the leg is entirely not connected to the body of the duckling.

And with a splint, will the duckling need to be separated, or can it continue to live with the rest of them (their enclosure is pretty spacious).

Thanks for the response
