Hi there,
We have a 10.5 week old chicken that is so pretty, I am hoping it's a hen. (Our neighbors turned us in for our roosters a few months ago, so we hatched out a batch to keep some of their babies.)
The bird in question is a Brahma/Production Blue (black austrolorpe/RIR mix). We are HOPING it is a girl, as the mama died last week and we are heartbroken.
I'm not seeing any hackle or sickle feathers, but i know that Brahma boys develop slower than other breeds, so s/he might not have them. It doesn't make regular chicken sounds... more like a raptor. It's a little weirdo, but we love it...

What's the verdict? The last 2 pictures of this little one's parents at the same age for reference. (Black one is the dad, Brahma is Mama.)

Thank you!

Hi there,
We have a 11 week old chicken that is so pretty, I am hoping it's a hen. (Our neighbors turned us in for our roosters a few months ago, so we hatched out a batch to keep some of their babies.)

Cockerel.

Here's another I have a question about. It was hatched June 20th, so just over 5 weeks old... It's hatchmates don't have combs at all. But, we have austrolorpes, amberlinks, production blues & brahmas and they all develop differently. I really like this buddy, too. I am starting to think if I am attached to them, they're definitely boys, ha.

I'm thinking that one's a cockerel as well, that's just a lot of comb for five weeks, even if it is a quick developing breed. In a couple weeks you should know for sure; if that comb keeps growing, it's definitely a boy.
