Hey ya’ll. First time raising chickens - I’ve had them from 3 days old. Now 17 weeks old. My Black Orp is usually the most excitable and energetic of the bunch, seems off yesterday and again today. She’s not totally lethargic but noticeable not herself. I waited for her to poop, and it seems really off too. See photo.

Crop feels empty, not interested in feed - however will eat mealworms and drinking a water ( which I put vitamins in today)

Any suggestions ?
Thanks in advance

Welcome To BYC

What do you feed, including treats?

Do you have a photo of her and how she looks?

I'd re-check the crop first thing in the morning before she's had anything to eat/drink, make sure it's emptied.

Look her over for lice/mites as well.

The poop has quite a bit of mucous, if she doesn't perk up, I'd consider treating for Coccidiosis and worms.

Heya,
Thank you for your reply.
They were on medicated pullet feed I was running out and switched to red hen pullet. ( unmedicated feed) only about 1.5 weeks ago. I had thought she’s eating it, but I had wondered if she was just picking a little here and there.

I feed them, the occasional piece of zucchini or herb. ( they love coriander) But treats are generally live mealworms or boiled mashed eggs but only every few days. They don’t free range but have a large run ( she is always catching little lizards )

I had planned to worm them in the next week or two, perhaps I will do that sooner rather than later.

I just have them all boiled egg, she went nuts eating it ( gave me a good change to check her vent and body for lice - nothing)

She seems a little more chirper than this morning - her comb has more colour to it and she just did a more ā€˜normal’ looking poo.

I’ll start with the worms and keep and eye on her and the rest of ā€˜em.

Thank you again

I hope you don’t mind me asking to check another days poop. What do you think, should I start coccidiosis treatment? ( amprolium or baycox?) I did worm them today. Or should I wait another day. She’s still preening, bright eyed but just not got that pep, and won’t touch her normal feed but just wolfed down egg and oregano. ( very small pinch of fresh) I only recently switched their feed, I am also wondering if she seriously hates it and just not eating enough.
This is her poop just now.
Any suggestions ?

What did you deworm with and the dose?

Either one of those above will treat Coccidiosis, so it may not be a bad idea to treat her.

The best one I could get my hands on was Levisolme.

Good news though, I went out this morning and she seems a lot better. Ruling the roost, eating feed, chatty and completely back to normal. And her poo was back to normal too. Same thing this afternoon. I’ll keep an eye on all of them but perhaps she had worms or just a seriously upset stomach.

Thanks again

Levamisole is a very good dewormer.

I'm glad she's doing better.
