Hi all. I have a 2 week old leghorn chick who is very lethargic and has an impacted crop. I’ve been giving water with rooster booster every hour and massaging. She is still laying around, seems too weak to walk. She was great yesterday and then this morning wouldn’t get up. She has had two small bowel movements but the fecal matter looks gummy and pink tinged. Anything else I can do? How much water should I be giving her once an hour? How long should I be massaging? Thanks for the help!

Is her crop full and very firm? What have you been feeding including any extras? If she has eaten grasses or foods other than chicken feed, she needs chick grit to help with digestion. Does she have any history of pasty butt? Has she been in a brooder with older chicks, or has she been eating bedding? I would give her some coconut oil slightly chilled and cut into pieces that she could peck. Mineral oil or olive oil may also be used up to a tsp. Those would be given very carefully and slowly, so she doesn’t aspirate or choke. Will she drink water if you offer it up to her beak in a small container and dip her beak? After she drinks, you can massage her crop several times a day. Consider treating with Corid for coccidiosis as well.

Her crop is full and firm. I am feeding moistened chick feed with some crunched up grub worms occasionally. She is also outside during the day so she may be getting grass. I think I messed up by not giving chick grit :( I started giving the other grit today. I am not offering her food, should I offer grit today? No hx of pasty but. She came from a hatchery/mailed and was vx for Mercks and coccidiosis. We added 2 more chicks from a feed store who were not vxed 1 week ago- all have been doing great until this morning. I do not believe she has been eating bedding, we are using hemp. I do feel small pieces of something with texture (not chick feed) in her crop. I was giving .1cc olive oil/water mixture this morning every hour for three hours by mouth then I switched to dipping her beak in water with rooster booster (it was easier to dip than try to hold her beak open). I have coconut oil but it is very old. When I dip her beak she is drinking- I am dipping it about 6 times and then massaging (doing this once an hour). Is this enough? She is just laying there in between me doing this and she is weak when she is standing. Should I still treat with corid even though she's been vaccinated? Thank you for the help!!

The Corid won’t hurt even if she was vaccinated for coccidiosis. But it sounds like she may be having an impacted crop. Getting her to drink as much water as possible and continuing massage is best. I would stop the grubs. Try some raw egg mixed well, and some very watery chick feed. You can give more oil. The coconut oil is probably fine to use, since it is for lubrication.

Great, thank you!

@Eggcessive update on my chick- her crop was empty this morning. She wasn't wanting to eat or drink on her own so I have been syringe feeding very watery chick feed with rooster booster every 2 hours. I have been giving her .3ccs at a time. She finally wanted to drink by herself just a bit ago. She has been having normal poops since yesterday afternoon (I did not start corid). She is weak but walking around and chirping, still lethargic and sleepy though. I still have her separated, but she is chirping for other chicks. Is this all normal from an impacted crop? Should I be doing anything else to help her recover?
