My 3 week old chick just ate a small clear hair band. No metal. She has not had treats or grit yet. I tried to get it away and down it went. I feel so stupid. I was not even wearing a hair band. They are in a sun room in my house. I have a lovely brooder and let them out to sit with me several times a day on a turf rug. I was cleaning up and noticed her sister and her running around and when I look down I yelled NO and just as a went to grab the band it was gone. My life ugh! What should I do?

Do you have a photo of the type of hair band? Like those tiny soft plastic/rubber ones or ??

She may be able to process that. If you do have grit, it may be a good idea to provide just a tiny bit for the chicks to pick at. Just give a pinch free choice for them to investigate.

Here it is I feel so dumb.

Yay!
I'm glad you found it:woot

More than likely, she would have been able to process and pass that on through. I would still begin to introduce them to chick grit, you never know what they may find AND the gizzard is a muscle. Giving grit early on, help builds it. There are benefits to begin giving grit right at hatch and all through life, regardless of what you feed.

Nah! Don't feel that way. Chick(en)s love to find things and play keep away from one another. 1 time I dropped a metal nut, of course a hen grabbed it, ran around like a maniac being chased all over the place. Oh man...eating metal is not good. I worried and worried for days thinking she had eaten it. Nope, I found it a few weeks later, thankfully!

Thanks for taking the time to reply! I will put a pinch of grit out in morning. I offered eggs and had to grit ready to go but they were not interested in the egg so I held off on the grit. I should be able to sleep tonight LOL Thanks again. I'm glad your metal nut eating chicken is OK! That would have scared me too!

Provide grit anyway, they need to start putting it in their gizzards. Soon you will want to take them outside and they will nibble on grass, maybe find a bug or two. You may want to start giving them mealworms so they learn to come running when you call ... lots of reasons for them to have grit!
