3 year old hen seems bloated, vent is very big

Was her crop firm and full, or squishy this am? I suspect that she is having a reproductive disorder called salpingitis, and sometimes they can develop water belly or egg yolk peritonitis with that. That can lead to pressure slowing the crop emptying, feeling poorly, runny poops, and walking more like a duck. Offer some chilled coconut oil cut into small pieces (1-2 tsp daily) or some mineral oil or olive oil mixed into a small amount of egg. If her crop is puffy, do not massage it, but if it is firm, you can massage it several times a day to get things moving. Make sure that she is taking plenty of water. Let us know if the calcium helps, but she may be laying internally.

It’s soft, but I could still feel some of the scratch I gave her while she was on the Epsom salt bath. She is drinking pretty well. She hasn’t laid for almost 6 months, but maybe she’s trying to again? I’m going to give her some calcium tonight after work, I’ll try the coconut oil as well. I have a vet appointment Friday if she hasn’t perked up by then. She is is up and walking around the run I have her in, which I’m taking as a good sign, but she’s still pretty slow.

My hen is about the same. Her crop didn’t feel nearly as full as it did this morning. I gave her some calcium, she is very mad at me now. I did let her eat a bit of food mixed wjth some yogurt. I thought I had coconut oil, but apparently I’m out, so I will try that tomorrow. Her stomach didn’t feel quite as tightly bloated today, but it’s still pretty big. I’m just going to keep nursing her along until the vet appointment.

She can eat her normal feed and she also needs to be drinking.

Yeah, I’m letting her back on her normal feed and she’s been drinking all day. I just read the yogurt might provide some good probiotics to help her clear her crop in case anything is going on there. Thank you!

Unfortunately, my little hen died. She wouldn’t leave her nest today at all. I took her to the vet and they did an x ray, she had cancerous masses all over. It was distending her abdomen a lot, the vet said she was emaciated under all the masses. There was just a ton that made her look so big. She passed away a couple minutes after they took the x ray while we were still there. Thanks for everyone’s help, I appreciate all the quick responses I got.

I'm sorry to hear about your hen:hugs

Thank you for letting us know what you found out from the Vet.
Cancer seems to be common in laying hens, it's sad.
