I have had great success using 5% Sevin Dust on my birds & in their coops, and preferred it to DE. I liked the economy of buying it in big 5# bags and using it to rid my birds of mites, to sprinkle a bit in their nest boxes & dust bathing spots, and to put under & around the areas where my broody hens set to keep the fire ants away.

But now this product's use is being limited, I think because folks had been using it too much for too many things, flinging it far & wide, & affecting beneficial insects like honeybees. Now I can only find it in 3# cans for more than the 5# bags used to cost.

Yesterday at Lowes I saw a product called Bayer Advanced Complete Insect Dust, an insecticidal broad-spectrum dust, sold in 5# bags for about $7. The label says you can use it on dogs & cats to kill fleas, ticks & lice. The active ingredient is Carbaryl (l-naphthyl N-methylcarbamate): 0.126%.

Has anyone here heard of this? Can you use it on & around the chickens like the Sevin Dust?

As far as I know, Sevin IS Carbaryl. I may be wrong tho, but that is what I always thought. What you want to do is compare the strength of the Bayer to the Sevin. Interesting how some companies can label it for dogs and other things and others can't now.

The active ingredient in it now is Permethrin, 0.25%. I think this is the same ingredient in the Adam's Flea and Tick spray. I thought you could use the Flea and Tick Spray, so I'm hoping this could be used for the coop. Otherwise I'll be stuck buying the shaker cans of the Sevin Dust. It's $11 or so at Lowe's now for a three pack. I think they are 1 pound per can.
