Hey all,

TLDR; Female duck hungry but struggles to eat, diarrhea, won't lie down, has bulge in abdomen, trying corid somewhat helped but still struggling, also ate a mouse at some point so possible blockage?

I'm currently dealing with my oldest female duck being sick for the first time. I first noticed about a week or so ago she wasn't eating much. I brought her inside to our "animal hospital" aka bathroom with a tub. She is very hungry but won't touch anything except a bite or two of the layer, peas and lettuce we give all of our ducks. Mealworms on the other hand, she eats like she has a bottomless pit. Her poo is basically diarrhea ranging from clear liquid with tiny flecks of brown to sludge brown to pasty green. Which I'm assuming is all based on how empty or full she is and what she's full on. I worried about the poo and gave her corid, which it seemed to perk her up a bit and she has started to eat the peas and lettuce, but only until she's starving and I don't offer her worms. I've tried other food like grapes, corn, sunflower seeds. She did try a few seeds. I even went and bought some Mazuri water pellet food and she tried maybe 3 of the pellets. She definitely has a bulge in her lower abdomen so I'm assuming she has an egg issue or maybe a partial blockage? She is somewhat sensitive to touch when I am looking around her vent. She also will not lie down. She is passing out standing up and even in the tub now she's nodding. So part of me wondering if there's something going on with either her legs or if her abdomen hurts to put pressure on it. I have meloxicam for all my animals for pain if needed and I also have different antibiotics. I honestly don't know what to do. I know going to the vet will most likely be what has to happen but I would like to try and figure it out before that route. Although now as I'm reading this, I feel like I'm torturing her. I dont know. Any help at all is so appreciated. I'm sorry it's so long. Ooh also, it is possible she may have gotten hold of a mouse. So I also worry maybe that's causing some blockage. Anyway, thank you to anyone who read this novel and any help is more than appreciated.

You are probably dealing with an egg-bound duck. When an egg is stuck, it can pinch off nerves to the legs and the result is imbalance and weakness. Diarrhea sometimes also is one of the symptoms.

Two things to do. Give her sugar water to raise her glucose to stabilize her. Second, give calcium. Use a human supplement. Calcium citrate works quickest, but a couple of Tums will also work, though slower.

Thank you so much. She seems fine now. I gave her corid and let her bathe in Epsom salt twice a day for like 3 days. One day I let her out by her family because she just wanted out so bad and she seemed a little better, didn't want back in so I decided to give her the night out there and she laid an egg. That was that.

I don't know if it's luck or just my obsessive Googling and using this site, but I'm almost always able to diagnose my animals. Almost always able to figure out the treatment. I start struggling when it comes to actually getting ahold of some of the meds and then figuring out the dosages. Having 20 chicken and 4 ducks, going to the vet isn't always an option. And I live in a state where I can't get a prescription without the animal being seen in person. EBay is helpful but not always. I'm struggling to find acidified copper sulfate for some reason. But without this site, I'd be lost and so would a couple of my babies.
