8 cubic feet per button?

This article recommends 8 cubic feet per button quail. First I've heard this. Also, isn't 24" high too high/low (in the danger zone)?

It also says to not use galvanized metal for any habitat parts. But that's what the hardware cloth is made of.

Buttons are far less likely to break their necks when flushing than coturnix quail. The modified totes that I keep buttons in are about 24" tall.

The space requirement in the article is generous, but not outrageous. To be honest, the more space you can give them the better. You want a MINIMUM of one square foot per bird (after subtracting the space used by feeders, waterers, dirt bath, and hiding places, more is better. Height is pretty flexible. You can't go wrong with more height or more space, however. The four square feet per bird in the article is probably about right for a pair of birds since you will be left with closer to two square feet per bird after subtracting the space used by the items above.
