Hi everyone i have 2 welsummer roosters about 17 weeks. The one has a normal 5 point comb, However the other has a 7 or 8 point comb?( i couldn't get him to stand still to count well). Is this normal? i haven found anything talking about extra points. Thanks.

Birds can have any number of points on their combs. For Welsummers, you want them to have five points (as this is what the American Poultry Association Standard of Perfection says a perfect bird would have), but they can have more.

I have a question about breeding for points on combs. this is the closest thread subject I've found so hope someone can answer this.

If you use a rooster that has 8 points and you want to breed for 5 what are the chances of getting 5 points? is multiple points dominant? or if you breed to say a 3 point hen does it average out? If you are breeding nice 5 point birds will you always get 5 points or is it all just a crap shoot?

In my experience, breeding for comb points is hard. I've bred birds with five points to another bird with five points and gotten 6 pointed combs and 3 pointed combs. I've had 5-point birds produce 3-point combs, and 7-point birds produce 5 point combs. If you breed two five-point birds together, you have a greater chance of getting five points on at least some of the offspring's combs. But, you will likely still end up with birds with different numbers of points.

Thanks, that does help. I got a black orpington rooster from a friend that is big and beautiful and very nice temperament but 7 points. I think I will try breeding him to my lavenders. they have 4 and 5 points so maybe I'll get ssome nice split lav roosters from that. Worth a try anyway.
