Hello! This is a thread where I will post some stories of our flock (s) through the years, from happy to sad, chaotic to exciting moments! Our flock has changed over the years, and many beautiful birds have come and go.

It's a great idea! It helps us keep track of what we had and have, as well as plans. I have one too and put a link in my signature. :)

I didn't really know where to start. I have so many stories to share! But I decided to start with a memorial to all the birds we have lost over the years.

RIP:
Hop-a-Long, Big Mama, Little Mama, Munchkin, Fluff Head, Nugget, Red, The Speckly sisters, Brownie, Chicken Lips, Big Red, Goldie, LeRoy, Princess, Peafowl chicks, Munchkins twin, and all the other wonderful birds!

[ the seven that escaped.]
This is a really old one. Years ago, we rescued 7 hens from an egg factory. They all were sickly and had cut off beaks. As soon as we got them, I fell in love with one and named her "Princess". Sadly, one day she fell sick with a disease, and died a few weeks later. One day, we rescued 2 more hens, I have no idea what they were though. We named them Goldie and brownie. By now, we were down to 4: Goldie, brownie, Chicken Lips, and Big Red. We had those four for a few more years, and Goldie died along the way from cancer. Then, one night, we didn't lock up the chickens. Big Red and Chicken Lips couldn't fight off the raccoons, due to having no beaks, but Brownie was able to save herself. I learned something that day: It is the most horrible, sickening things to experience, having your chickens eaten like that. From then on, Brownie the lonesome hen slept in our garage. She was terribly lonely so; we gave her to my grandma who had many chickens. Brownie lived to about 12 years old! She died peacefully in her sleep.

[Munchkin: the chicken that flew]
I was at my grandma's house, helping her out with her chickens (but mostly eating her cookies!) when I heard her scream. I ran outside, and to my horror, a hawk was carrying Munchkin, a bantam cockerel, away! We watched as the hawk flew away, Munchkin wriggling and screaming in its talons. We thought he was gone. Suddenly, the hawk dropped him!
My grandma went looking for him. A few minutes later, she found him on the side of the road, covered in blood. But alive! Somehow, he had survived being attacked, and dropped from 100 feet onto concrete? At the time, we didn't think about it, we were just happy he was ok. But now I think about it all the time!
