Hugh E. Long thought that a chicken in every pot would be a sign of the economic well-being of the country. I think that a chicken in every yard (and the eggs they provide) might prove to be both an economic and a health benefit to us all.
(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
I am on the cusp of getting my first chickens. I have previous, limited experience with chickens. I spent summers on my aunt and uncle's farm, and it was my job to feed them and gather the eggs each morning. At age ten, I had a very close and meaningful relationship with a rooster named Benny, until he wound up as Sunday night's dinner. I instantly became a vegetarian.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
Will be getting 3-4 very shortly.
(3) What breeds do you have?
I'm thinking of Buff Orpingtons but am wondering if I should include other breeds, like RI Reds, Sexlinks, or Ameracuanas.
(4) How did you find out about BackYardChickens.com? Search Engine
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
Organic Gardening, Beekeeping (my husband's hobby and mine by extension), self-sufficient living.
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
I've happily married for almost 43 years--my husband and met as embryoes. We have a generic dog, three generic cats (inside) and another two outside (ferral cats that my husband has tamed to the point where they will let him pet them, but they absolutely refuse to be taken inside), and three gigantic koi. All are rescued animals, except the Koi. I'm a teacher--Adult Literacy and Academic Subjects. I also design educational programs and curriculum for schools, non-profits, and businesses and am a writer of both fiction and nonfiction. In my spare time...oh wait...I don't have any spare time. My husband and I have always been interested in autonomous living and continue to aspire toward a totally self-sufficient existence (with the exception of his addiction to Pete's Coffee). I am looking forward to learning more about caring for chickens from the group, so that my flock will be happy and contented in their new home.
