How much square footage is adequate for 20 coturnix chicks up to 4 weeks of age? Adults need at least a square foot but how about chicks up to a month old since they seem to triple in size every other day? Last spring I had 20 birds in 12 square feet and while it wasn’t ideal it worked until I could figure out breeding pens or eat extra birds. I’m hoping I have half this batch I’m incubating sold at hatch but if that doesn’t work out I’m trying to figure out options in my basement until they are big enough to go outside (35F so far this winter) but I’d rather not have them taking over the whole thing! Any creative ideas? Thanks!

As you noticed, they grow fast. By the time they're 4 weeks old, they pretty much need the full amount of space. I usually split my chicks into two brooders (doubling their space) at about 2 weeks, then increase the space again at 4-6 weeks to their adult housing.
